Notes
Individual:
Benjamin was originally married to Amanda. They both lived in Gwinnett Co., at Hog Mtn. They had a large family. Amanda got ill, and Ben hired Hannah to help take care of Amanda and the family. When Amanda died, Ben and Hannah got married and moved to AL and had another rather large family. According to Ken Berryhill (posted to www.gwinnetth.org forum on 02/20/2003) who is a relative doing research, Ben and Amanda had 11 children together and Ben and Hannah had 8 more children.

Was listed as a Private in the Battery D Ninth Georgia Light Artillery Gwinnett Artillery - Georgia Volunteers Mustered April 23rd, 1862
The unit was organized April 23, 1862, by Captain Tyler M. Peeples. It was sent to Atlanta to guard government stores, awaiting the arrival of arms and equipment. In August 1862 it served with General Humphrey Marshall at Abingdon, Virginia. This served as the base of Marshall's command through most of 1862 and 1863. In December 30, 1862 the unit Marched 28 miles to Saltville, Virginia to defend the works there. In September 19-20, 1863 the unit participated in the Battle of Chickamauga and protected a ridge near Chickamauga Creek with two, twelve pound Napoleon cannons, two twenty-four pound howitzers, and sixty-nine rounds of ammunition. (Army of Tennessee). In January-March 1864 it was with detachement of Army of Northern Virginia in Tennessee. In October 1864 the unit was ordered to Richmond for heavy duty. From November 1864 - March 1865 it served with General Richard S. Ewell, in the Army of Northern Virginia at Petersburg, Virginia. Finally in April 9, 1865 the unit surrendered with General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Benjamin and Hannah moved from Gwinnet to Sand Mountain AL and are buried at TOWN CREEK CEMETERY, DEKALB, ALABAMA Located-from Fort Payne, AL- just off Hwy 35 north just before Plainview School, turn
right, about 1/4 mile on left next to Town Creek Church.

The 1880 census shows the wife as Manda Jane Chesser. It shows the couple having 7 children, Colonel W. Chesser being the oldest, and Joseph T. Chesser being the youngest.

The 1900 census (GA GWINNET CO, ROLL 202, BOOK 1, PAGE 173A) shows Benjamin could read but could not write.
