John Callahan Strong was the younger brother of Captain Bill Strong. Both served together in Company K, 14th Kentucky Cavalry; John as Sergeant, Bill as Captain. John C. was mortally wounded by a pocket of Rebels on or about January 1, 1864, while returning from Booneville. He lingered in pain for the next several months with a serious wound to his side. Meanwhile, Company K mustered out of service in March. John died on May 31, 1864, and is buried in the Old Strong Family Cemetery at Sulphur Gap, Breathitt County. The headstone seen here is the new government marker erected in April 2000. The old footstone is seen resting on the ground at the base of the new headstone.
