This is a partial Askren Family Genealogy in about 15 generations. The family name started in Yorkshire, Co. England, common probably in the 13th century, but may have been predominant there for centuries before. Askren is a place name, and a small hamlet variously named Askern over the last 1200 years or so. The derivation of the word is from old Danish, meaning place of the white ash tree. The village surrounds a mineral spring and pool that was popular with the Romans and later the Vikings when they in turn dominated the countryside there. The indiginous population of the region is a result of many legions of conquering armies so Askren stock is rather sturdy.
We follow the ancestry from Yorkshire in the early 18th century to Maryland, then Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Today the Family is spread through the US and the world.
What is MOST needed are the branches which have deceased individuals after about 1900. But there are several holes that need to be filled throughout the entire ancestry.
Any pictures, especially pre-1900 are a treasure. Individuals, families, cemeteries and gravesites are needed. Documents of any kind are a tremendous help in research. All can be scanned and made available for the Askren company of genealogists.
The result of many cumulative man-years of collecting Askren history will be the production of an interactive multimedia "CD" which will be made free and available to all.
