Individual:
"He was granted the 'mastership' of Bamburgh Castle when he bought from Henry VIII the cell and lands of the late monastery of St. Oswald, and leave was granted him, and his heirs, to hold similar courts as might have been held by the Prior of the Austin Canons for the assize of ale etc.
"The 'lordship' of the castle of Bamburgh, which dominates the coastline of Northumberland near Holy Island, remained under the Crown as it had done over the centuries.
"Sir John . . . lived for the most part in 'his house nigh Alnwick' . . . and sometimes, in his capacity as Warden of the Middle March, at Harbottle Castle.
Before 1552 he married Jane Radcliffe, who was the widow of Lord Ogle, who was killed at the battle of Halidon or Ancrum Moor in 1544. They had daughters Juliana [or Eleanor] and Grace. Later he married Isabel Sheppard and it is believed that Marie is their child.
In 'The Fighting Forsters' it is suggested that Sir John also had three "natural" children and I take this to mean that they were board out of wedlock.
When Sir John died in 1602, he was succeeded by his son Nicholas.
