Individual:
Enlisted in Capt. William Penlan's Troop. Was stationed for two months at "Cathey's Fort." He then marched across the Blue Ridge Mountains against the Cherokee Indians and while with a hunting party shot one of them but while reloading his gun, received a shot in the back from another Indian and was left as dead by others in his company. He evidently recovered fully because his pension record says he enlisted in Captain Thomas Kennedy's Troop of Light Horse and served on short tours. He then enlisted in Captain John Russel's Company, Colonel Joseph McDowell's Regiment and served about 5 months, during which he was in the Battle of King's Mountain in which he received a slight wound in his mouth. For all this service, he was given credit for one year's service on the pension record.
From "Wakefield-Henderson-Venters Family History" (References Revolutionary War pension record of Henry and Mary Wakefield -- also have copies of these records)
From National Archives summary:
Moved in 1796 or 1797 to Sumner County, Tennessee, then to Smith County, where he continued to reside. Mary sometime after his death moved to Macon County, Tennessee.
