It is ordered that mr John Sanford, mr John Briggs and Thomas Lawton are authorized to procur the pouder and Shott that is ordered by the generall Court for this toune, by makeing suteabl pay to mr Roger Williams and it is to bee for the tounes use prouided the town doe make the same pay to the aforenamed men as the generall Court expresse within one month after the aforenamed men haue procured the sayed pouder and shott and in Case it Come to any Causealtie after the sayd proCuering before the month bee expiered then the toune to bare the losses as also the Charge of procuering it is to bee borne by the toune and if the toune doe not make pay as aforesayed to the aforesayed men within the time afore sayed then the sayed pouder and shott to bee at the disposing of the afore sayed men as their proper goods. 1668, July 8: Thomas Lawton of Portsmouth, Rhode Island sold Laurance Springhast (name also spelled Lawrence Springhast), inhabitant of Newport, house carpenter, for ú10 and "the making and maintenance of fifty rods of good sufficient fence, to be with all convenient speed", a parcel of land in Portsmouth, "lying on the southward of his farm called the Longe Swamp Farm, and containing five acres, bounded on the North by the said farm, extending from the western most end of fifty rods eastward by lands rented by me to Charles Hazelton and extended from the North line sixteen rods southward to the Common, the whole length fifty rods."
