Notes
Individual:

1633. G S R: Edward Turner was born this year according to the record on his tombstone at Middletown, Ct. The birth was in England somewhere, but we have no evidence as yet as to where his home was. He came over to America as a single young man, not over 18 years of age. From researches made by Dr. T. Larkin Turner of Boston, it appears that there were over fourteen early immigrants of the name of Turner. He is a descendant of Humphrey Turner, and a recognized authority on matters of genealogy pertaining to his branch of the Turner family. Edward Turner seems to have been the first of our branch of the Turner family to come to America.
1651: This authority states that Edward Turner was in Milford, Connecticut, this year; but says his name "is not found in the town list, having later removed to Middletown, Connecticut" He was an Elder of the Milford church says one record, but this would make him an Elder of the Church before the age of 32, at which time he removed from Milford (IV:344; Savage).
1656, October 25: "Edward Turner and Mary Sanford daughter of Richard Sanford were married 25th-8th month by John Endecott Governor" How the courting was done at so long a range in those difficult days of travel would make a pretty story, but history has left no trace of it (IX:57; Boston Service).
1658, September 15: "Item, Goodman" Turner hath the grant of land near his shop for to build on, and make a garden, so much as may be spared and not annoy the cart wayes and the Court appoynted John Lane and Thomas Samford to Judge of the same" (TV, Milford XIII:124; NYB&G).
1659, September 9: "Edward Turner hath one acre of land given to him, in the mill neck upon condition that he watcheth for it, and that it be laid out in order so that it doth not hinder any other lots" (p. 125; Do).
1660, February 7: "Edward Turner hath liberty granted him to take up the remainder of that poynt of woodland that is in the northeast end of Ensigns lott, on the other side calves pond meadow" (p. 125; Do).
1665: During this year, sometime, or possibly the next year, the family moved to Middletown, Connecticut. During the stay in Milford the first three children were baptised there. This is the year of the Great London Plague in which 97,306 people died in London alone. London's population then was about 500,000, hence nearly one-fifth of them perished. The next item shows the Middletown homestead which, with the five items following, are all entered on one page in the Middletown Land Records. They show acquisition of 560 acres during the next 35 years (IV:344; Savage).
"One Bassett Family in America: The Turner Family" by Buell Burdette Bassette; p. 755; New Britain, Connecticut; 1926 (HeritageQuest)

1665: Edward Turner was listed on a "List of Settlers in Middletown, Connecticut, 1650-1700".
"The History of Middlesex County 1635-1885: Town and City OF Middletown" by Henry Whitmore; pp. 282-320; J. H. Beers and Company; New York City, New York; 1884

1666, July 13:"The Land of Edward Turner in Middletown in the Corporation of Connecticut Recorded to him and to his heirs forever: One piece of land where on his house standeth Containing five Acres more or less which hee bought of Thomas Milles abuting on the high way north, and Yamcchak River south, the land of William Haris east, and the land of Thomas Milles west. "One parcell of Meadow Land, on the east side the Great River containing 9 acres, bought March. 3, 1670. . . One parcell of meadow land bought of William Ward being fourty foot on the banke as the hill runneth and thirty foot from the edge of the Edge of the Hill on the highway . . . One parcell in the south quarter containing 110 acres; one parcell westward from the town of 137 acres, bought August 1, 1673 . . . One parcdl on east side Great River of 189 acres, 2 1/2 miles long and 38 1/2 rods broad, bought May 27, 1680. . . One parcell on the west side of the Great River southward from the town containing about 10 acres, bought February 15, 1701." So far as early town offices in Middletown are concerned the present Volume I of town meeting records does not show them. On December 27, 1731, the town voted "that the old town book be transcribed in all the proper and needful parts thereof." Evidently the copyists did not think the elections "needful parts. " Hence we cannot know what offices Edward Turner held, but there is little doubt but that he had his share (I:48; LR)..
1667, May 9: Edward Turner was one of 30 who "were sworne" at the General Court held at Hartford. David Sage was another and also Joseph Wright. Just what they were "sworne" for does not appear; but since most of them were young men in the twenties there is little doubt but that they were sworn in as freemen (II:246; CC).
1667, October 10: "This Court grants liberty to Edward Turner to assigne over his right in Franchway Boigway his French boy, to any such person in this Colony as two Assistants shall approve of, for 12 yeares from June next" (p. 225; Do).
1669, October 4: Edward Turner here appears among the 38 freemen of Middletown, per census taken of all Connecticut freemen this month (XXI:192; CHS).
1670, March 22: Here is a "List of Householders and Proprietors," 52 being listed, all that there were in Middletown. Edward Turner is listed at ú44-00-00. The largest property owner was Nathiel Collins who was rated at ú225-00-00, the total being ú4,322-10-00 (I:26; TV).
1671/2, March 7: "John Plumbe plaintiff Edward Turner defendant in an action of debt with damage to the value of ú8." The Jury awards Plumb ú6-8-5 and cost of court (III:119; CC).

1674, March 23: Edward Turner gives mortgage of his house and lot to Mr. Richard Bryan, merchant of Milford, in sum of ú118-09-04 (I:112; LR).
1674, October 10: William Corby dies with inventory of ú150-13-07. Thirty-two creditors living in New London, Middletown, Hartford and Faimington are named, Edward Turner being one from Middletown (III:140; CC).
1675, April 27: "At the same town meeting the town Granted Edward Turner a piece of Ground of about ten foot without his fence into the highway the breadth of his hous which he is now seting up" (I:55; TV).
1676, January 19: John Sanford of Boston makes bequest to the children of Edward Turner of Middletown - his nephews and nieces (VI:prt 1: 181; P Connecticut, Boston).
1678, September 5: "A negroe of Mr. Giles Hamline named Jack being complayned of by Edward Turner for attempting a rape upon Elizabeth, the daughter of the sayd Turner of about 10 years of age and having confessed before the commissioners at Midletown that he would have forced the sayd Girle, but that he found her to smale and the sayd Negroe owning the same before the court, this Court doth adjudg that the sayd Negroe be severely whipt on his naked body and that he return Home to Mr. Hamlin his master" (IV:7; CC).
1680, March 30: Edward Turner has 13th choice among 21 to "the lots of 200 Acres on the east side the Great River beginning on the hill next the divided land" (I:59; TV).
1683, October 11: "Mr. John Plumbe is plaintiff by way of appcale from the judgment of the Court of Assistants, Oct. 5, 1682, Edward Turner defendent, for unjust molesting of him, to the damage of ú10: in which action the jury found for the defendent confirmation of the judgment of the Court at New London, which was 15s and cost of court allowed 4s" (III:145; GC).

1685, August 29: "Edward Turner was three times called to court to bring James Benit to the court or else he would forfeit his recognizance. He appeared and declared he could not bring in James Benit. The Court declared he had forfeited his bond of forty pownds" (p. 111; Do).
1693, January 11: James Cockshott of Madiamoodas dies, leaving estate which totals only ú36-16-00. The estate is indebted to twenty two people who are named. Edward Turner of Middletown is one of them. The Court ordered one-third to the widow and the rest proportionally to the creditors (V:158; CC).
1693, December 7: "Edward Turner, Sr. is plaintiff, James Bennit of Paqucnage defendant in an action of debt with damag for keeping two of his children the one thre years and two moneths and the other thre moneths to the value of ú45.
