Individual:
The family Bible of Lorna Brewster Nighman, granddaughter of Katie Martin, includes notes that state that Katie Ann Martin was born in Clane, County Kildare. Research done by the Kildare Heritage and Genealogy Company in April and May of 1999 was unable to turn up any record of this birth, or of the presence of Katie's parents, in County Kildare.
Source: Edna Chapman Stobbs, notes
Katie Martin emigrated with her parents to the U.S. in 1855 when she was 4 years old. Placed in convent upon death of parents, but ran away and came to Monroeville, Huron, Ohio with foster parents. Moved to Concord, Lake County, Ohio where she met and married Elijah Brown. Died of the flu.
Selected quotes from the Painesville Telegraph, March 17, 1967: "Along with the multitude who brought their Irish luck with them was Mr. and Mrs. William Martin and three children. Four-year-old KatyAnn soon found out what it takes to live in America, for in the East River she learned to swim and dive with the big boys. ... This Irish lassie had plenty of spunk and bravery, for when placed in a girl's school after her parents' death she, determined not to stay, escaped three times: once by hiding in a grocery wagon; another time under a meat cart, and the third time via a new sewer pipe, where at the end stood the school guard. Each time she was severely punished. The third and last time, when 10, she jumped to freedom one night from a balcony 16 feet above the cobblestones, hiding in a culvert through the night, crossing on the morning ferry to Long Island and to the safety of friends. Spirited down the Hudson at night by friends, she rode out of New York City on the way to Ohio securely hidden in a barrel of dishes, and, so no one would ever follow, her death notice was published in the paper. With the same kind of Irish bravery she survived a Michigan forest fire at the bottom of a well with her sick baby in her arms. Her husband, Elijah Brown (kin of Elijah Brown, teacher, principal, and superintendent of Fairport schools for over 25 years) put the tick from a bed in the well, helped Katy down, sufficiently covered the well over for protection, saying, 'If I live through the fire I'll be back to get you out.' Katy spent the last 30 years of her life in the Perry and Madison area as Mrs. James Davis. The Davis Road in Perry was named after the family."
