David was only six years old when his widowed mother, Elizabeth, married Robert Enders, a wea lthy merchant from Paducah, KY. She died when David was about ten, and his step-father raised him. David's apparent devotion to his step-father was evident when he named his first child Robert Enders Craig. David became a successful farmer in McCracken Co., KY., but died at age 40 on 20 November 1886, only three days before the birth of his youngest daughter, Jane "Linnie"Craig.
