Individual:
Served as a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War in 1788 and member of the Home Guard in 1799.
Henry Amos, Sr., is found in the 1810 Monogalia County, Virginia census. Also, listed in the 1810 census are Henry Jr., and Stephen.
His father Henry Sr. married in 1807 Elizabeth Miller, but she was not the mother of any of his children. In the 1820s Henry Sr. married again, to Elizabeth, wid. of Jeremiah Stilwell Sr. She was not the Elizabeth Davis who married Jeremiah Jr., son of Jeremiah Stilwell Sr. (that Elizabeth was still living in 1850 as "Stilwell"). There is no evidence that Henry Amos Sr. ever married a Dorcas Hall. This was surmised by Curt and Beryl Amos because they did not know of the first lot of land that Henry Amos Sr. bought in present Marion Co. WV; they only knew of the lot that Henry Sr. bought from David and Charity Hall. They believed that the purchase was by Henry Sr. from his in-laws, although the document says no such thing. One could wonder what would have been the published result if they'd known of the land purchase from William Roark. There is no evidence in Monongalia Co. of the name of Henry Sr.'s first wife, mother of at least his oldest children.
Henry Amos Sr. (156) was a Continental drummer boy in 1778 at age 15 and joined the Home Guard by 1779. Henry married Dorcas Hall (157) in 1780 or 1790. She was from Pennsylvania, though her parents, David Hall (314) and Ann Charity (315), came from Delaware. After the Revolutionary War, Henry was given a 205 acre veteran's land grant on Gladys Creek, Monongalia County, VA. He settled at the head of Indian Creek, where he built a log blockhouse the same year a neighbor was scalped. Rev. Peter Barrack preached there. Henry died in 1837 at age 72. Their family founded Fairview, Marion County, WV.
