p. 6. "From the Editors Notebook" A letter from Louis E Jones, 36 E Hickory
Road, Lombard, IL 60148 cites a reference "Genealogy of the Gordon-Macy,
Middleton-Curtis and Allied Families" for his claim that the wife of William
Clayton of Chichester was Proudence Lanckford of St. Peter's the less,
daughter of William Lackford of Broughton parish, Hampshire, England, and
that she was possibly born in County Surrey. He also states that William
Clayton of Chichester was of the Parish of Rumbaldswick, near Chichester,
Sussex, that he was baptized 1632-Dec-09, Boxgrove, Sussex, citing various
seemingly valid references.

CLAYTON
William Clayton, father of Mary Clayton is said to be a descendant of
Charlemagne of France; of Ranulphus, who accompanied william the Conqueror
against King Harold; of Robert, Lord of the Manor of Clayton, who was born i
Candebec, Normandy France, and who fought with William the Conqueror in the
Battle of Hastings; of Earls, Lords, Dukes, Knights, Crusaders, Bishops,
Justices and other nobility and servants of the Crown.
He arrived in the New World on the good ship "Kent", out of London with
his wife Prudence and children in 1677. He was one of the Commissioners sent
out by the Fenwick Proprietary of New Jersey to purchase land from the
Indians. Until this task was completed he lived in Burlington NJ then he
settled on 500 acres of land at Chichester PA., which had been granted him b
the Crown. He was a personal friend of William Penn, and highly respected by
the Quakers, he himself being a Friend. He presided over the first court
under the Proprietary Government held at Upland in Chester County on Sept 13
1681.
In 1683/4 he was a member of Penn's Council and served as acting Governor
of the Province of Pennsylvania during 1684-1685. He died in 1691. His
daughter Mary married John Beals Sr. in 1682.
(I copied the above from some book and failed to copy the source, however
I thought you might enjoy it.) Bellarts gives his deat date as 1689.

Some genealogists think that William's wife Prudence was a widow of Mikels
and that her maiden name was Miller, the daughter of Robert Miller and his
wife Margaret Braithwaite Miller. Others disagree, so I have not used that o
my charts.
William Clayton was indeed acting Governor of Pennsylvania according to
records, although the office was not as it is now. He was the first named of
12 Burgesses by Governor Markham, therefore when the Governor was absent
Clayton presided. The records show that he presided during the years 1684/5.
