Info sheet:
My brother, Keith Ellis, went at Genealogy the right way. He got intereste
(before he was married) at an early age. He went around visiting relatives
while they were still alive and put all his information into a booklet and
made one for each member of the family. Much of his information was "word of
mouth", but also he visited cemeteries, court houses, etc. The following are
a few TIDBITS that he has passed on. Hope none of them offend any of you or
your families.......Hazel Ellis Ashens.
Abner Ellis lived at Rheatown, Greene Co., TN. Today it is about 5 miles N
of Greeneville. It just has a grocery store, gas station and about 30 houses
The picture of the New Hope Church that he gave me is from there - It is
reconstructed, of course, Keith couldn't find a Quaker Church there now.
Caroline came from Blount Co., TN - about 50 miles south of Rheatown. She
apparently was born and lived there until she married Abner Ellis and moved
to Rheatown. Grandpa John Henry Ellis told Keith that Caroline's mother was
Keziah Perkins Lewis Beals. She was a Quaker Preacher. Caroline moved to
Coolidge, KS and lived with son (1892) Wm Jay Ellis until she died 24 April
1895. Cemetery is 1 1/2 miles north of Coolidge.
Abner Ellis' will in 1883 named Jake of Webster Co., MO and William Jay
Ellis executors.
John Henry Ellis said that in 1890 (?) Caroline came west to visit
relatives, who would have been her 2 brothers, Calvin and Malin Lewis and 3
sisters Betty Ann, Susie and Mary Doty, who lived near Emporia, KS. Jake was
living in MO and Abner, Jr was living near Americus, in Lyon Co., KS.
Abner Ellis Jr moved to Fall River, KS in 1910. He died in 1946. He was a
shoe repairman for years. He had son Ruel who moved to Arcadia, KS before
1960 and a daughter, Mfrs Willis Miller in Wichita, KS in 1960. His wife was
much younger than he was and Keith Ellis talked to her in 1960. Abner Jr was
buried up on the plateau in Mt Zion Cemetery near Fall River, KS.
During the Civil War, back in TN, when the battle was close to them, their
mother Caroline, sent Wm Jay and his brothers into the woods to hide so they
wouldn't have to fight. Their Quaker beliefs didn't believe in fighting.
When Caroline arrived in Coolidge in a carriage, she saw her son William
Jay, who she hadn't seen in about 20 years and her first words were "Is that
you Will?"
Also in the Charleston Cem. at Fall River, KS is a Thomas Henry Ellis
b-1859 d/1891 at Fall River, KS. That is 19 years before Abner, Jr moved
there.
We supposed he was a brother from the date of his birth, but he isn't
listed as one of their children in TN.
William Jay Ellis and w/Emma Caroline and 2 sons, Arthur and John Henry
and 2 daughters May Ramey and Carrie Nelson are buried in Garden City Cem.
