Individual:
Per Tatom-Tatum Chronicles on www.rootsquest.com - He was raised on is father's plantation on the James River in Virginia. He obtained his education through private tutors hired by his father. He next appears in public record, when he was 25 years old, in an advertisement in the Virginia Gazette, dated May 29, 1746, published in Williamsburg, VA. A Mr. John Martin of King William county, VA advertised for the return of an Irish convict servantman who "stole a middle sized grey spotted horse, well gaited and goes sprightly, with a bridle and an English double skirted saddle, the crupper made o Virginia leather, belonging to Mr. Stephen Tatum." (King William county was formed from part of New Kent county. Most records of King William county prior to 1865 were destroyed or lost during the Civil War. This makes it very difficult to trace this family's history before they came to King William County, VA.)
Stephen's brothers and sisters are named in his sister Susannah Tatom Fullilove's will. Her will is recorded in Volume 1, page 52, film #J.B. 938 of Granville county, NC. Her will was probated in August of 1774. The will names all of her siblings and numerous other relatives. She names siblings - John Tatum, Benjamin Tatum, Nanny Graves, Jemima Carrington, Agens Hicks, and Sarah Chandler.
In 1760, the family reside in Spotsylvania county, in the Piedmond section of VA. At that time this area was called St. George's Parish. Stephen was the only Tatem found in county records there. On August 17, 1765, he witnessed a Spotsylvania county deed from Wm. Garrett and wife to James Rawley. On October 4, 1765, he bought 150 acres of land in St. Geoges Parish from Thomas Lane and Ann, his wife.
Some of Stephen's relatives (Absolum, Howell, and brother John Tatom) had moved to North Caroline and convinced Stephen and his family to joined them. So he moved to Orange county in 1771, having sold his planation of 150 acres on Doughasses Run to Richard Blanton and George Anderson for forty-five pounds of "Current Money of Virginia" in Virginia on November 21, 1771, maing a nineteen pound profit. They settle in the newly opened Piedmont section of NC in St. Mary's District along Little River. In North Carolina, Stephen's sons, John and William, fought in the Revolutionary War, Stephen being too old to fight. There is a memorial to John Tatum at the Dickson county Courthouse in Tennessee for his service in that war. Stephen is listed on the tax list of the titheable persons of Orange county, NC in 1779. His estate is reported to have a value of $1,196.12, a sizable amount in those days.
On September 3, 1788, when he was 63 years old, Stephen executed his last Will and Testament. His probated WILL is recorded in Book "B", page 73, in the records of Orange County (later Granville co.,), NC. There is no record of the exact date of his death; however, his widow, Mourning Tatom, is listed by herself in Orange county in the First Census of North Carolina, taken August 1, 1790, living near her son John and his family. So Stephen died sometime between Sept. 3, 1788 and Aug. 1, 1790, and was buried in the family cemetery on his plantation on Camp Creek, a branch of Little River. (The area that was his plantation is now government property.)
