Individual:
[Nicholas Buck.FTW]
Joseph Buck was the 2nd child of Nicholas Buck by his 1s t w ife Mary Appolonia Kohl, born 1 Nov 1764, baptized 18 N ov 1 764; sponsors, Joseph Kohl and Alberta Kohl at Haycoc k Twp. , Bucks Co., Pa.(GR,p13)
In 1787 he was assessed taxes of 5 shillings as a singlem a n but for no land. However, it is assumed that he inherit e d about that time a portion, probably 1/2 of his Decease d f ather's property in Springfield Twp.,Bucks Co., Pa.(P a Arch ives,Series 3/Vol13/p810) He remained in Bucks Co. u ntil ab out 1800, when he sold his real estate holdings t o his brot her, Leonard, and with his family moved to White hall Twp. , Northampton Co., Pa. Between 17 Feb 1805-29 Ma y 1808 h e moved to Westmoreland Co. with his family and ag ain, afte r 25 Mar 1824, removed to Cambria Co., Pa. joinin g his so n already there since about 1823.
On 2nd Dec, 1787, Joseph Buck married his 1st wife, Mary E l izabeth Meecle/Merkle/Mackel/Mechel/Magel who was born 2 3 J une 1769, daughter of Christopher and Magdalen Meecle(G R p1 77;p38). After bearing Joseph's 1st two children, Mar y Eliz abeth died on 24 Aug 1794 aged "about 35 years old"( actuall y 25 years old)(GRp184) The two children were 3 and 4 years old. She was burie d a t Bally, Washington Twp., Berks Co., Pa.
After an eight month mourning period, on 20 Apr 1795 Jose p h Buck married Rosina Dumm, born Aug-Dec 1766, daughte r o f Casper and Mary Eva Dumm of Moselem Springs,Richmon d Twp. , Berks Co., Pa.(GRp181)
Joseph's third child was born 4 Apr 1796. The year 1797 mu s t have been a traumatic one for him and his wife. In Jan ua ry 1797 within 4 days they lost their 2nd and 3rd son le avi ng only one, their oldest. In November 1797 they had an oth er son. The three deaths of his 1st wife and 2 sons i n as m any years may have been the motivating stimulus fo r his dec ision to move about 1799/1800 to Whitehall Twp. N orthampto n Co.(now Lehigh Co.) where he had 4 other childr en. His la st two children were born handicapped(deaf and d umb) in 180 3 and 1804. This additional trauma may have ag ain motivate d him to move this time to Westmoreland Co. be tween Feb 180 5 and May 1808. Their final move after 1824 t o Cambria Co . was probably motivated by a desire to be i n close proximi ty to his sons who had preceded him there i n 1823.
Joseph died in Cambria Co. between 1830 and 1840. His wido w , Rosina (Dumm) Buck survived him, dying in Carroll Twp. , C ambria Co.,Pa. between 1850 and 1860. In the 1850 Cens us , she was living at the age of 83 in Carroll Twp. carin g fo r her 46 year old handicapped daughter Susan.
By his two marriages, Joseph Buck had eight children.
