Title: Civil War Notes
Text:
Harrell's Battalion part of Brigadier Gen William L Cabell's Cabell's Brigade under Major Gen James F Fagan's Division Harrell's Battalion AR CAV Co C list shows a Jonathan Dosier (Doshier) as a Sergeant enlisting on March 16th 1863 in Yellville AR. I can not find any listings for Jonathan prior to this date. He enlisted this day along with John Henry and John R. Doshier. John Henry and John R were both listed with Dowd's Co. that enlisted on July 11th, 1861 and participated in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. After Dowd's was disbanded they enlisted in the 27th Reiment AR Inf. There is no listing in any other outfits that I can find for JD until the March 16 1863 date. It is hard to believe that this is his first service because he is enlisted as a Sgt. He may have served earlier but the information may be lost. Harrell's Btn was also known as the 17th Cav. an Internet web site stated " The officers and men of this unit enlisted in Aug 1862 under Col. C.W. Adams which had disbanded and the men transferred to the command of Gen. Cabell. So I do not know if this means Jonathan could have been enlisted in Aug of 1862. At one point there was a half-hearted attempt to increase Harrell's Btn to a regiment by ordering the transfer of those men who had no deserted from Adam's AR Reg. at Praire Grove to the btn., but less than half of those so ordered showed up. Harrell's Btn seems to have been constantly on the move, scouting or skirmishing all the time, and was part of Prices's MO Campaign in the fall of 1864. JD had transferred to Schnabels Btn at that time. There is an order dated June 15, 1864 from Gen Shelby's HQ to "Capt John A Schnabel commanding recruits (OR's Series 1, Vol 34 part IV, Page 678.) The order directs Schnabel to gather his command and join Shelby. It appears then taht the Schnabel's MO Cav Btn ws formed that summer, since they participated in Price's Raid that fall. Prior to that Schnabel had commanded a co. in Elliots Cav Btn during the Camden Expedition. J.D. was with Harrell's Btn before this unit was formed. So I have verification of service from at least March 16th, 1863 until surrender at Jacksonport on 11th of May 1865. Jonathan was with Schnabel's Brn when it was surrendered by Brigadier Gen M. Jeff Thompson, CSA to Major Gen. G.M. Dodge. Jonathan was held prisoner until paroled at Jacksonport on June 5th 1865. Jonathan was promoted whenhe treansferred form Harrell's Btn from Sergeant to 2nd Lt and was promoted while in Schnabel's Co A to 1st Lt. One reason that JD may have enlisted late is that his age in 1861 was 37 and I have seen records early in the war where enlistments at this age was turned down, as the war dragged on they must have lowered the requirements as demand for able body recruits increased.

Jonathan Daunt Doshier is My GGGgrandfather. He was born on Sept 19th 1824 in Cannon Co TN. His father was Wiley Peter Doshier born in 1803 in Blunt Co TN. and his mother was Rebecca Haines born in 1804 in NC. JD was one of four boys born to Wiley and Rebecca. His brothers were named Peter, John Henry and Wiley. All four boys served in the Civil War and fought for the Confederacy. by the end of the war all four brothers, along with two nephews and two cousins accompany JD in Schnabel's Btn MO Cav, CSA JD had two other cousins, Hawkins and Henry doshier that were in the 35th AR inf and they were both Killed in Sept of 1862. There unit saw action at the battle of Prairie Grove on Sept 7th 1862 and they more then likely died of wounds received in this battle. Jonathan also had a cousin named James Belle Doshier that fought with McClouds Frontier Reg in Texas for the CSA. I think they primarly dealt with indian uprisings. James Doshier earned a medal of Honor as a civilian scout after the war and and after he served as a texas ranger. James had a brother however, Harrison Doshier that was also in the 35th AR inf. but he deserted after Sept 10th, 1863 when the Yankees took Little Rock. He joined the yankees for the rest of the war. There was another Yankee cousin Richard Prichard Doshier who was a cook for Co F 1st AR USA but Richard's son William M Doshier which would be JD 2nd Cousin was with the Tx 2oth Militia CSA. Around 1826 when JD was about 2 years ould his family moved to Clarke County ILL. Jonathan's 2nd Uncle Adam Dosher who was in the Rev War as was JD Grandfather Peter Doshier was living in ILL at this time. Around 1832 JD Grandfather Peter moved from TN to ILL and he died in Clark Co ILL on AUg 6th 1838 when JD was about 14 years old. These were tough years for JD because between 1832 and before 1840 JD's dad also died. Rebecca moved back to TN before 1840 with her four boys, more than likely after the Death of her Husband Wiley Peter. In 1847 JD married Louisa Caroline Hollis on Aug 12th 1847 in Cannon Co TN. By Dec 20th 1851 JD had moved his family to Marion Co Ar when his third child William Thomas my GG Grandfather was born, His siblings Rebecca Mariah was born June 11th 1848 in TN and Martha J was born in 1850 in TN. In 1852 JD widowed mom joined them in Marion Co AR from TN. The last two children Perlina Susan was born in AR on 1856 and Robert J G Doshier
