Guillaume TRAHAN I (b. abt 1611; d. abt 1682), toolsmith, emigrated to Acadia aboard the Saint-Jean in 1636. (Another source indicates that Trahan was a marshal or general (marchal) in the French army). He was originally from St. Germain de Bourgeuile, Indre- et-Loire, France. He brought with him to Acadia his wife Francoise Charbonneau (m. 1628) and their daughter Jeanne Trahan (b. 1629). After Francoise died in the mid 1660s, Guillaume married Madeleine Brun, the daughter of Vincent BRUN and Marie Breaux, in 1666.
The Trahan-surname familes in North America originate from the three sons by Guillaume’s second wife, Magdeleine BRUN: Jean-Charles, Alexandre, and Guillaume II.

Guillaume TRAHAN is a passenger on the St Jean which leaves of La Rochelle
on April 1-st, 1636.
In August 16, 1654 Guillaume TRAHAN signs the act of surrender of Port Royal,
his name is spelt Guillaume Trouen and he is a property manager of the
inhabitants.

ship St. Jehan and sailed for Acadia, arriving in 1636. As early as 1640 he
became the representative of the inhabitants of Pentagouet (Castine, Maine), La
Heve, and Port Royal. Guillaume was trustee and president of the inhabitants of

on 1 Apr 1636. They came on the "St. Jehan". He was a blacksmith or toolsmith and
an important citizen of Port Royal. He signed the act of capitulation of Port Royal in
1654 on behalf of the citizens.

- So it was in 1654 that an English force from Boston headed to Acadie with orders from Cromwell to clear the French from the place. The British commander, Robert Sedgwick, had easy work. He quickly subdued the lightly defended Acadian lands, but instead of clearing the Frenchmen out, left the colony in control of a local council headed by Guillaume Trahan.
