In Search of Mrs Martha Robertson Arnold
Birth & Family
Estimate of Birth Date - About 1801 to 1807
LDS Family Search Ancestral File™ (q.v.)
Martha Eliza GOODLOE (AFN:HCCW-L7)
Born: 1801 Place: NC
Died: 1881 Place:
Maury County Tenn. Wills & Minutes, Vol 1, Book B, 1810-1825
1-Dec-1816
Last will & test. Of John M. Goodloe, pp. 29-31
Goodloe emancipated his "woman of color, Rachel", but distributed his other
slaves. His property (land, household, and slaves) was divided approximately
equally between his wife, Mary Hunt Goodloe, and his daughter, Martha Eliza
Goodloe.
Martha (unnamed) is also present in the 1830 Census for Madison County,
Tennessee (p. 84):
Males:
1 (0-5); b. abt 1820-1825
1 (15-20); b. abt 1810-1825 (a nephew or visitor?)
1 (30-40); b. abt 1790-1800 (= William ARNOLD, b. abt 1795)
Females:
1 (5-10); b. abt 1820-1825 (= Mary Elizabeth Robertson; q.v.)
1 (20-330); b. abt 1800-1810 (= second wife, Mrs. Martha Eliza Robertson; q.v.).
The Arnold family is recorded in Stephen F. Austin's "Register of Families" (page
30):
William Arnold, 38 years of age (b. abt 1795)
Martha Eliza, his wife, 26 years of age (b. abt 1807)
2 female children
From the state of Tennessee and just arrived
Took the oath and entered in Coast Colony
(Note: this entry appears to be made in early 1833, before the death of William
Arnold)
One of the (unidentified) female children may be the child enumerated in the 1830
Census for Madison County, Tenn. (b. 1820-1825), who would have been about 8
to 13 years of age in 1833. The other female child (not listed in the 1830 Census)
may have been aged 3 years or less, and would thus be the daughter of William
and Martha Eliza. [DeArmond-Huskey (2001) states that Martha's two daughters
from her previous marriagees, Mary E. Robertason and Martha Arnold, were
placed in a convent inKentucky at the time of her marriage in 1836 to Peter
Rives]. (See entries below: the eldest child, Mary Elizabeth Robertson, was born
23-Aug-1824. By 1843 she married Dr. John Martin Taylor, and she died about
25-Feb-1868). Their mother, Martha, survived the epidemic, but appears to have
left Texas, perhaps later remarrying ("Martha Arnold" is absent from the Republic
in an 1837 Court hearing (q.v.) and she is not found in the 1840 Texas Census,
nor is "Martha Arnold" found in the 1840 Census for Tennessee). (But see later
entry from the LDS: Martha had remarried again by this time, and would have
been listed in the cited time interval as "Martha RIVES").

Re: Martha Goodloe
Page 170: "Benjamin Franklin Robertson married Martha Goodloe of Maury
County, Tennessee, and moved to Union County, Kentucky. A daughter, Mary
Elizabeth, was born in 1824 to the couple. Shortly thereafter Frank died, leaving
a widow and fatherless child. The mother remarried sometime later. Mary Eliza
was educated at St. Vincent's Convent in western Kentucky. By 1843 she
married Dr. John Martin Taylor, a graduate of Transylvania University at
Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Taylor was the son of Samuel Mitchell Taylor, who was
kin to the distinguished family of Taylors which produced two presidents of the
United States. In later years, the family of Dr. John M. Taylor lived at "Mauvilla,"
a plantation in Oldham County, Kentucky, near Westport. A second home was
located on Bayou Bartholomew in Arkansas. It was called the "Hollywood"
plantation".

ROBERTSON-L: Robertson Report Vol 15 Gen. James Robertson Part 4, No 16:
Benjamin Franklin Robertson, s/o Jonathan Friar Robertson and Ciddy Davis mar
Martha Goodloe, d/o John M. Goodloe and Elizabeth Jelks of Maury Co, Tn
100 Mary Elizabeth Robertson b 23 Aug 1824; d 25 Feb 1868
Benjamin Franklin Robertson was born ca 1798 to Jonathan and Ciddy (Kitty)
Davis Robertson, who had married about 1791 (Kelley, 1973, pp. 38, 54).
Jonathan (b. 13-Jun-1769) was the son of James Robertson, co-founder of the
city of Nashboro (later, Nashville, which would become the administrative center
for Davidson County, and Capital for the State of Tennessee), and Charlotte
Reeves. The Craigheads were kinsmen, and married into the Robertson family
(Ibid, pp. 99-100). (Note: David CRAIGHEAD** was bondsman for the marriage
of Martha E. Robertson to William Arnold in Nashville, Tennessee in 1826). If
this attribution is correct, then William Arnold would have had another link to
famous Tennessee pioneers, by helping to raise the granddaughter of General
James Robertson (1742-1814).
Clayton, W. W., History of Davidson County, Tennessee : with illustrations and
biographical sketches of its prominent men and pioneers
Philadelphia: J.W. Lewis & Co., 1880, 677 pgs.
** David Craighead came to the bar about 1814, and would have acquired more
distinction as a lawyer had he not married into wealth, and thus become relieved
of the spur of necessity.
LDS FamilySearch™ Ancestral File entries support this attribution. They list
Martha Eliza Goodloe (1801-1881), AFN:HCCW-L7, as being the daughter of
John Minor GOODLOE (1771-1816) and Elizabeth JELKS (b. abt. 1778), who
settled in Maury County, Tennessee. These ancestral files attribute the following
marriages for Martha:
1. Benjamin F. ROBERTSON (AFN: HCCW-PQ), marriage 1823.
2. William ARNOLD (AFN: HCCW-R3), marriage 5-Nov-1826.
3. Peter G. RIVES (AFN: HCCW-TF), marriage 14-Feb-1836.(Peter Rives would
die in Crittenden County, Arkansas, in 1852).
4. James B. HARRIS (AFN: HCCW-TF), marriage 29-Sep-1852
Remarriage In 1826
In 1826, the widowed William remarried, to Mrs. Martha Eliza Robertson, in
Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.
"Mrs. Eliza Robertson married General William Arnold, of Jackson, in Nashville,
Nov. 5, 1826" [this from the Jackson Gazette, 16-Nov-1826, as abstracted by
J.K.T. Smith (1996), "A Genealogy Miscellany III. Madison County, TN," p. 18].
This reference suggests that Eliza was a young widow, being about 20 years of
age at the time of the marriage to General Arnold (as estimated from the survey
recorded by Stephen F.Austin, q.v.).

It appears that Martha's second husband, General William Arnold, was frequently
in debt, probably due to unwise land speculation. The following abstract (from
Crumpton, "Madison County Deeds") is of interest, because it refers to a "Martin
E. Goodloe" (a relation of Martha's?) And the original document apparently
features the signatures of both Martha and William:
2/435, 436 22 Dec 1829 $1.00 Deed of Trust
William/Martha E. Arnold to Robert Hughes
Arnold owes Charles Miles on note now in suit in Madison Co with Thomas
Henderson as co-defendant and security. Mortgages 222.5 acres on 4R-11S in
Haywood Conty as being at Martin E. Goodloe ENT# 297 about 1 mile W of s.e.
crn R5-S11. Also mortgages a lien on 234.5 ac in Weakly County heretofore
conveyed to William Stoddard in trust. This trust is to take effect after said
Stoddert is satisfied.

Rebecca DeArmond-Huskey gives additional information on the widow Martha
and her daughter Mary in her book Bartholow's Song: A Bayou History (2001). On
p. 51, she writes that in 1818, a young surveyor, Peter Gilam Rives (pronounced
Reeves) left his home in Virginia and headed west, arriving in Arkansas (then
Missouri Territory). He claimed government land in what would become the
counties of Crittenden, Drew, DeSha, and Lincoln Counties. By 1836, Rives was
in Crittenden County, and married a young, wealthy, twice- widowed lady, Martha
Goodloe Robertson Arnold, and brought her to his wilderness home where they
lived the remainder of his life. Martha's two daughters from her previous
marriages, Mary E. Robertson and Martha Arnold, remained in a convent in
Kentucky. In 1843 Mary E. Robertson, age 18, left the convent to visit relatives in
Union County, Kentucky. There the beautiful and wealthy heiress met Dr. John
Martin Taylor, a practicing physician and also well- to-do. They immediately fell in
love and were married a few months later.
On page 509, Ms. DeArmond-Huskey writes that "John Martin Taylor married
Mary Elizabeth Robertson 4 Jul 1843 in Union County KY. She was born 9 Aug
1824 in Nashville, TN, the daughter of Martha Eliza (Goodloe) and Benjamin
Franklin Robertson, who were married 30 Sep 1823. ..
Martha Eliza Goodloe was born 15 Jun 1807 in Maury County TN, the daughter
of Elizabeth (Jelks) and John Minor Goodloe, who were married 12 Nov 1805.
John Minor Goodloe was born 1771 or 1789, the son of Sarah and Robert
Goodloe.... Martha Goodloe Robertson married second (5 Nov 1826) General
William Arnold, who died 1 Jun 1833. She married third (17 Mar 1836) Peter
Rives, who was born 24 Oct 1793 in VA. Peter Rives claimed land on Bayou
Barthomew in Drew County as well as land in Desha, Lincoln, and Crittenden
Counties in 1818. He settled on the Bayou and built a cabin. By 1836 he was in
Crittenden County, where he died in 1852. Martha Eliza Goodloe Rives died
there 4 Jan 1881.

I'm sure you have more things to do than answer questions from unexpected
sources, so I apologize for the question I sent to Rebecca Husky and am
forwarding to you. Basically I am trying to determine who married James B.
Harris. Was it Martha Eliza, or her daughter, Martha J. Arnold?
Thank you for your assistance, Chaplain, Colonel E. Arnie Porter

I don't have any info on this.
My source just says that Peter Rives "married a young, wealthy,
twice-widowed lady, Martha Goodloe Robertson Arnold...."
She had two daughters from the previous marriages:
Mary E. Robertson and Martha Arnold.
Mary m Dr. John Martin Taylor when she was 18.
No info on Martha.

Biography of Emmett B. Tolleson (1842-1901)
http://www.couchgenweb.com/arkansas/crittenden/biog.htm
Emmett B. Tolleson, a substantial planter and merchant of Lucas Township,
whose postoffice is at Pinckney, is a native of this State, born at Helena, March
14, 1842, and is the son of William P. Tolleson, originally from Spartansburg, S.
C., who died about 1845. He [William P. Tolleson] immigrated from South
Carolina to Helens, Ark., near the year 1830, and was one of the early settlers of
that portion of the State. A lawyer by profession and circuit judge [p.444] of the
Helena judicial district for several terms, he was an influential citizen, and as a
Democrat in politics, was one of the electors of Polk and Dallas. He was married
in Helena in 1836 to Miss Nancy Elliot Williams (then the widow West) who was
born in Lexington, Ky., in 1809. She died in her native town in 1885, being the
mother of one child by Mr. West and three by Mr. Tolleson: W. P. (deceased),
Margaret W. McConnell (who resides at Lexington, Ky.) and Emmett B. The
latter, the youngest child, grew up in Phillips County, Ark., receiving his education
at the private schools of Helena. He lived with his mother till he was grown and
then commenced for himself as a planter in the county where he now lives. He
was married in Memphis, Tenn., to Miss Annie Elise Harris, September 29, 1874.
Miss Harris was born in this county in 1853 and is a daughter of James Harris, of
Columbia, Tenn. [Annie's mother was Martha J. Arnold]. He [James Harris] was
for a time book-keeper in Memphis and afterward became an extensive planter in
Arkansas. His wife was Martha Arnold of Tennessee origin, where she died. Her
[Martha Arnold's] father, Gen. William Arnold, was a graduate of West Point and
a brigadier- general in the United States army, and died in Texas about 1836,
owning vast landed estates. To Mr. and Mrs. Tolleson have been born five
children, all living except one, viz: Martha E., Annie Imogene, Emmett B. and
Marguerite A. Mr. and Mrs. Tolleson own two plantations, 675 acres of good land,
with 350 in a fine state of cultivation, upon which are usually raised 200 bales of
cotton. These are superior farms, located on the Mississippi River sixty miles
north of Helena and thirty miles south of Memphis, and upon one Mr. Tolleson
has resided since 1852. In 1861 he joined the Confederate army, enlisting in
Company E of the Third Arkansas Cavalry. He served till near the close of the
war and participated in the following noted battles: Jonesboro, Ga., Chickamauga
and was with Longstreet at Knoxville. He was captured at Island No. 40, near
Memphis, in January, 1865, and was immediately paroled, returning to his home.
He is a stanch Democrat and cast his first vote for Seymour. Mr. and Mrs.
Tolleson are members of the Episcopal Church and are highly respected.
Some biographical notes for Peter G. Rives (Third husband of Martha Goodloe)
R. DeArmond (1980), "Old Times Not Forgotten, A History of Drew County"
(Arkansas), Rose Publ., Little Rock, AK
p. 21. "Peter Gilam Rives, who came from Virginia in 1818-19 to survey land in
Arkansas County (later to become Drew and Crittenden), bought a parcel of land
in 1820 that was known as "the Rives tract." Rives lived in a one-room log cabin
[possibly the one illustrated on p. 8 of Ms DeArmond's book] on the west bank of
Bayou Bartholomew near the old Indian Trace crossing. In 1836 he married
Martha Eliza Googloe Arnold in Nashville, Tennessee, and soon after came to
live in Crittenden County. Her daughter by a previous marriage, Mary Elizabteh
Robertson, married Dr. John Martin Taylor of Winchester, Kentucky. In 1844, Dr.
Taylor bought the Rives plantation from his father-in-law and built a large log
house, which he named "Hollywood Plantation," after the holly trees which grew
there. He [Taylor] also owned a plantation and a magnificent house, "Mauville,"
near West Port, Kentucky. His wife died in 1868, and Dr. Taylor established a
home in Monticello for his young children. He continued to commute to
Hollywood Plantation and upon his death in 1884 was buried there. His sons
Henry, Ben, and Rives continued to manage the plantation under the name of
The Valley Planting Company, moving the headquarters to Winchester in 1901."

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas: Crittenden County
Senate: P. G. Rives; 1846-53, House: P. G. Rives; 1844-49.
Nannie Rives Cashion: Her grandfather, Peter G. Rives, was one of the first
settlers of this county, having come here before Pierce was president. He was a
large land owner, and cleared most of the land south of West Memphis, and was
a prominent and useful citizen. Thomas Cashion (deceased) was born in Bullitt
County, Ky., in May, 1858, and died December 3, 1888, in Crittenden County,
Ark. When a boy he went from his birthplace to the State of Texas, where he was
married to Miss Nannie E. Rives, January 11, 1880. She was born April 27, 1860,
in this county, and is the daughter of Samuel D. Rives, who was born in Kentucky
and died here on April 16, 1865. Mrs. Cashion's father was a well-to- do farmer;
her mother was born and raised in this county, where she died December 31,
1879, having had four children of whom two are still living: Nannie E. and Edna
(who resides in Galveston, Tex.). Mrs. Cashion, the second child, moved from
Crittenden County to Texas with her mother, and received her education in the
district schools of Collin County, afterward attending the high school in McKinney.
[ "Samuel D. Rives" (ca 1826-1865/6; father to Nannie Rives Cashion in the
narrative above) appears to be the son of PGR and a previous wife. One LDS
contributed file gives Martha A. Davis as a spouse of PGR.]
From the above-cited Bible records, I assume that the Rive children born
between the 1836 marriage to MEG and the death of PGR in 1852 were born to
this union. These children were:
John Goodloe Rives - born 9th Jul 1837; died July 31st, 1876 (?) (aged ~ 39-y).
Lucy Ann Rives - born 4th Jul 1839 [death date 1841 is struck-through in Bible
records]
George G. Rives - born 19th Jan 1842; died May 12, 1859 (aged ~ 17-y)
David Craighead Rives - - born 28 Mar 1846; died 26 Sep 1849 (aged ~ 3-y).
Burnel (Burwell?) Frederick Rives - born 14th Dec 1848; died May 12, 1859
(aged ~ 9-y)
[One LDS file gives the parents of PGR, Sr., as Burwell Rives and Mary Gillum]
