Text: There are two different birthplaces given for Alexander, one being Kirkcudbright, Scotland, the other Laggon, Donegal, Northern Ireland. In both reports the birthdate given is the same.
In 1718, Alexander and his wife Sarah, departed Donegal, Ireland and arrived in Boston, Massachusettes . They and the families who came with them were known as the Scotch-Irish party. First settling with the Ulster Scots in the Worcester area, they later moved to Palmer, Massachusettes before 1732.
The Virginia and Nova Scotia families of MacNutt or McNutt traced their ancestry to a Scotch family in Galloway, MacNaught, of Kilquhanitie, which estate had been in their possession from 1480 until c.1667, when the last of the owners, John, left Scotland for Ireland, accompanied by his four sons. The family of MacNaught of Kilquhanitie thus became extinct in Galloway. The first of the name of MacNutt who emigrated from the north of Ireland to America was Alexander, b. 1656, arriving c.1720.(Source: Colonial Families in the United States, Vol 5, p 379)
