The first glimpse Mansel had of Ethel was when he came to Hydro to work for
her father in the depot. She had been out milking in work clothes and
unsuccessfully tried to slip up the stairs without being seen. Their first date was
to the Methodist Church; she walked him right down to the very front row.
Mansel tried in vain to enter the military during World War I, but being deaf in
one ear prevented him. He traveled to the Mayo clinic in MN, but nothing could
be done. He was living alone at Driftwood when the terrible flu epidemic of 1918
hit.
