Notes
Individual:
Harriet moved with her parents to the vicinity of, what was to become, Correctionville, Iowa in 1855. It was here that she married Zachariah Games Allen . Zackariah was the the son of Russell Allen and Sally Ray. He was also the brother of Erastus R. Allen, who married Harriet's sister, Susan (two Allen brothers married two Shook sisters). They were one of the first 5 couples married in Woodbury County. Zackariah, "Zak", was born in Washington County, Indiana. According to family stories, he went "West" with an immigrant train drawn by ox teams in 1853. He and his brother, Erastus, owned land to the west of Correctionville, and are mentioned in the shooting incident of Jacob Pindell, allegedly by Harriet's father, Elias Shook. Zak was ordered by the court to hold elections for the organization of Correctionville Township which was to be the north half of the east half of Woodbury County. This election was to be held at his cabin in Union Township on 4 March, 1857. Up to this time for some years, Woodbury County had been divided into two townships, Sergeant's Bluff, the west half, and Little Sioux Township, the east half. Their first child, Alice, was born near Correctionville, and Zak and Harriet moved shortly thereafter to Sidney, Nebraska, which was an Army Post at that time. It was here that their 2nd daughter was born in 1859. Again, moving by ox teams, with Zak driving one wagon and Harriet another, the family moved to Denver, Colorado, arriving in April, 1860. It was on this trip that two men were killed by lightening in a tent right next to the Allens. Zak worked as a stone mason in Denver, and then moved to Pueblo, Colorado in 1862. It was here that he was elected Sherriff, and built the first shingled house, the old Court House and the Old School house on the Hill. About 1869 they moved again, to a ranch on Lower Huerfano for a year, farming. In 1870 they moved to Upper Huerfano where he ran a dry goods and grocery store and was the Postmaster. In 1871 they moved back to Pueblo where he was again elected Sheriff. Zak was also active in the Masonic Lodge having joined on 1 June, 1870. In 1874 they moved to Del Norte, Colorado where he became City Marshall. Poor "Hattie", as she was often called by her family, sure did not have a settled life! Look what happened next: ------
The following article was transcribed from the Pueblo Weekly Chieftain newspaper, issue of 19 August, 1875.
"SHOOTING OF ZAK ALLEN"
"Our Del Norte correspondents said as an account of the unfortunate affair which occurred in that place on the morning of the 8th which will probably result in the death of Z.G. Allen, formerly of Pueblo, for four years as Sheriff of this county, and well known to all of southern Colorado. The facts of the case are as follows: On the 89th, Allen, who is deputy sheriff of Rio Grande County, and Jack Lewis, a Del Norte policeman, arrested, in that town, two Mexicans who were accused of stealing horses at Lake City. During the evening Allen learned that a a party of Mexicans had determined to break into the jail and liberate their companions. To prevent the occurrence of any such event, Allen posted Jack Lewis in the jail, armed with a gun loaded with duck shot and having agreed upon a countersign ordered Lewis to shoot anyone who came near the jail during the night and failed to give the proper answer when challenged. About two o'clock in the morning, Allen for some purpose not explained, perhaps to see if his sentinel was watchful, went to the jail, and as he approached the building, was challenged by Lewis and failed to respond. The latter, not knowing who might be approaching in the darkness, fired his gun at the party approaching, the man fell and Lewis on going outside, found that he had shot Allen, the charge having lodged in the latter's stomach and right wrist, shattering the latter badly. The parties were only four feet apart at the time the shot was fired. About twenty duck shot penetrated Allen's stomach, and his chances are exceeding slim for recovery. His physician has but little hope, and one of our correspondents thinks that before this writing, Allen will have died. The unfortunate man blames nobody but himself and thinks he ought to have given the counter-sign agreed upon. We are with agreement with jack Lewis and are satisfied that he thought he was doing his duty when he fired the shot. He and Allen were intimate friends and came from here, to Del Norte together. a few weeks since Lewis was formerly a soldier, and had learned in the army, we presume to obey orders. Under the circumstances no blame can possibly be attached to him."

According to another source. Zak had loaded the shotgun in Newman-Chestnut-Stephens drug store, remarking that "whoever got that load would not live long." After posting Lewis, Zak checked out a dance, and after the dance closed, went to the jail to see if everything was all right. Zak did die from his wound a few days after being shot. He was buried in Del Norte.

Hattie was pregnant with their son, Bert, when Zak was killed, and was left a widow with 3 children still at home; their two oldest daughters having just gotten married in May and July, a few months prior to their father's death. Less than 5 years later, Hattie's 7 year old daughter, Inez, died of diphtheria. Hattie later remarried to Cyrus Flint Newcomb, a judge, on 3 Aug 1881 in Alamosa, Colorado. Cyrus d 3 Jan 1905 in Durango, and Hattie died 31 Jan 1921 at the home of her daughter, Rose Lou Patrick near Ignacio, Colorado.

Almost all of the information on Hattie and Zak and their families was provided by Mrs. Marion Crews.
