Individual:
Note:
Andrew Crist's family sails on the Mortenhouse and first settles in Philadelphia, Pennsylvani a. The reason Philadelphia was selected for the landing port of the Mortenhouse and other refugee ships was that the land for this colony of Pennsylvania had been given to the Quakers by King Charles II of England. This was to be a place were people of all faiths could worship, and have a chance to govern themselves. When the Frist census was taken in 1790 there were nine families with the name Crist. We believe Andrew was one. From the Pennsylvania Farm, the family later moved on to the Shenandoah Valley. Andrew was now about 33 years old. In the 1768 records, it shows that he had now bought a piece of land near Timberville, in what was called "the marsh". His log cabin home was not far from the property of the ancestors of Abraham Lincoln. This great grandfather (whose name was ( Virginia John Lincoln) and his son, Abraham Lincoln, were the forebears of a future president, also named "Abe".Here, Andrew built, with his own hands, and probably the help of neighbors, a sturdy log cabin. He named his place "The Oaks". Here he and his family lived for some time. Later this log home was burned. Soon Andrew built a larger home for his growing family on the same property. The census of 1782 reports that Andrew now had "11 white souls in his family, 1 dwelling, 1 other building, no slaves, 4 heads of horses, several apprentices, vehicles, etc..." We believe that Andrew lived to the year 1800 as his will was probated on December 22, 1800.Sources on Crist Family: Research done by George William Crist Jr.
