Guilford p. 446 "succeded in 1562 to the larger part of his father's
Suffolk estate, including Groton Manor, where he resided until about 1594
when he and his brother-in-la, Roger Alabaster, were led to invest in
Irish lands. A little later he joined Sir John Skynner, Sir Thomas
Crooke and others in promoting a plantation in the barony of Carbery, co.
Cork, and eventually acquired a considerable estate in the neighborhood
of Aghadown, co. Cork. He gradually disposed of his Suffolk property,
much of which passed to his brother Adam. His brother's diaries
contained frequent references to John's absences in Ireland and
occasional visits to London and Groton, betweeen the years 1596 and 1609,
after which he is not known to have been in England."
Ibid, p. 447 Will of John Winthrop dated 20 mar 1613 "ffirst I bequeathe
my Soul to Almightye God..Then I give towards the reliefe of the poore
people of the pish of Aghadowne aforesd..Item I bequeathe unto Adam
Wintroppe of the Michells, the some of tenn pounds sterling. Item I give
to Elizabeth Winthroppe my daughter 220 pounds sterling & to my dau Anne
Winthroppe one hundred and fower score pounds sterling for their
preferment to be paid unto them and either of them at the daie of their
marriage provided that they and eyther of them marye by the conseynt and
to the lyking of their mother..Item I give to Elizabeth my nowe Wyfe
daughter of Thomas Powlden deceased all my house goods and chattels
whatsoever..and I doe..appoint (her) my sole and absolute
Executrix..this eight and twentyeth day of March 1613..John Winthrop"
Ibid 447 The Winthrop coat of arms is: Argent, three chevrons crenelle
gules, over all a Lion rampant, sable, armed and langued, azure. The
