The Allied Family
Of
Delano
The election of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt as President of the United States
made the name DELANO well known. Less well
known is the fact that an earlier President
of the United States, General Ulysses Simpson
Grant, was also a DELANO descendant.
The compiler of this ELLENWOOD GENEALOGY
believes that descendants of SYLVESTER
DOTY ELLENWOOD and his wife, LUCY ANGELINE
DELANO, may be interested in the Delano
lines of these two Presidents, as well as
in their own Delano ancestry. Because of
alliance with the Ellenwood family, this
book contains brief sections on the OAKES
and CLOUGH families. The lines of DELANO
descent for all these families are given
on the following pages.
From the chart on the next page we
learn that DOUGLAS HARLOW ELLENWOOD and his
wife, CYNTHIA CLOUGH OAKES, were second
cousins, both being great-grandchildren of
SYLVANUS DELANO, JR. Thus FRANK OAKES
ELLENWOOD and his descendants have two lines
of Delano ancestry.

The Delano lines traced here are based
on the information given in THE HISTORY &
GENEALOGY OF DELANO & LANNOY 1096-1899 by
J. A. Delano & M. Delano, pub. in New York
1899. Corrections and additional data found
in my research on this family have been included,
with references cited. The title
page of this Delano Genealogy reads:

PHILIPPE (1) DE LA NOYE, the immigrant
ancestor and founder of the American Family
of DELANO, was born Leyden Hall 1602, bapt.
in the Walloon Church 1603, and grew up under
the teaching of the separatists of the established
Church of England. He was the son
of Jean and Marie de Lannoy, of French
Protestant faith (Huguenots), who had gone
to Leiden to escape the persecution of the
Catholic party then in power.
Page 255
PHILIPPE DE LA NOYE is said to have been
one of the passengers on the SPEEDWELL, when
it started the trip with the MAYFLOWER, but
was one of those who remained in England
when it sprang its leak. In 1621 the FORTUNE
sailed, and on November 11, 1621, just one
year after the MAYFLOWER passengers sighted
the hills of Cape Cod, the Pilgrims are said
to have "hailed with joy" the arrival of the
FORTUNE, and among her passengers was Philippe
de la Noye, aged 19 years.
In 1624 at the distribution of land
Philip was awarded one acre as his share.
He was admitted a freeman Jan. 1, 1632-3,
being a resident of Duxborrow, where he had
early removed. He was one of the first 26
purchasers in Marlborough, and one of the
54 inhabitants of Duxbury to whom the grant
of Bridgewater was made in 1645. Records of
Plymouth Colony Vol. I p. 32 show him to
have been a Volunteer in Pequot War June 7,
1637; on jury May 2, 1637 and Dec. 4, 1637,
and on grand jury June 4, 1639. He was one
of four from Duxbury appointed by the Colony
Court to a jury of 12 in 1637 to lay out
paths and highways and build bridges in
Duxborrow.
Philip de la Noye d. prob. at Bridgewater,
Mass. abt. 1681, aged 79 years. He mar. 1st
at Duxbury, Mass., 19 Dec. 1634, HESTER
DEWESBURY of Duxbury (Records of Plymouth
Colony Vol. I p. 32), and she was the mother
Page 256
of eight of his children. He mar. 2nd at
Duxbury in 1657, MARY PONTUS, dau. of William
Pontus, and the widow of James Glass. She
was the mother of his son, Sanuel.
Although he was not a MAYFLOWER passenger,
many of Philip's descendants are eligible
for membership in the "Society of
Mayflower Descendants" since three of his
sons married descendants of Mayflower
passengers. These are:
THOMAS (Dr.) DELANO m. REBECCA ALDEN, dau.
of JOHN and PRISCILLA ALDEN
JONATHAN (Lt.) DELANO m. MERCY WARREN,
granddau. of RICHARD WARREN
SAMUEL DELANO m. ELIZABETH STANDISH, granddau.
of CAPT. MYLES STANDISH
A grandson, JONATHAN (3) DELANO, m. HANNAH
DOTY, grdau. of EDWARD DOTY of the MAYFLOWER.
The ELLENWOOD, CLOUGH, OAKES, GRANT,
and ROOSEVELT lines are all traced from his
7th child and 4th son,
LT. JONATHAN (2) DELANO, b. Duxbury 1647,
d. Dartmouth, now New Bedford, 23 Dec. 1720
aged 73 yrs. He was one of the original proprietors
of Dartmouth; in the confirmatory
deed from Gov. Bradford 13 Nov. 1694 his share
of abt. 800 acres was derived from his father,
Philip de la Noye, whose name is among the 36
shareholders receiving their titles from the
Indian Sachems, Wasamequin & Wamsutta. He was
chosen Deputy to General Court June 1689 and
held many other offices. Commissioned Lieut.
Page 257
