Leaving France:Zacharie Cloutier attended meetings in Tourouvre in the citysquare in which Giffard told of the opportunities in the newland and promised each person who accompanied him a tithe ofland on the St. Lawrence river. He was particularly interestedin skilled persons and Zacharie a master carpenter was one ofthose.The second was Jean Guyon, master mason. These two men weresigned to special contracts as witnessed by the notary MathurinRoussel at La Rochelle on the 14th day of March 1634. Thecontract in favor of Giffard, stipulated that Giffard would paythe passage plus food and lodging in Canada for the two artisansplus one family member each, for a period of three years to datefrom June 24th 1634. After two years, the men would be allowedto send for the rest of their families also at the expense ofGiffard. The Seigneur agreed to give each man a few head oflivestock to get started farming plus one thousand arpents ofland. (An arpent is about one and one quarter acres thereforeone thousand arpents = 1250 acres.Several families left France at the end of March 1634. Therewere 35 people in the party including Giffard, Maria and GasperBoucher, Jean Guyon and Zacharie Cloutier. Thomas Geroux,Francois Belanger, Claire Morin, and Jeanne Mercier were some ofthe single persons aboard. Eight other men and women joined theship at Dieppe. On June 24th, 1634 after a voyage of two longmonths the passengers disembarked at the tiny hamlet the colonyof Quebec was at this time.By the 22nd of July 1634 master carpenter Cloutier was hard atwork along with his colleague Jean Guyon, building the manorhouse for their lord as well as the parish church and Fort St.Louis in Quebec. -- Excerpts above were taken from the book Families inTransition p.7-8
