!BIOGRAPHY: Revolutionary War Veteran. Served as a private in the Northam pton County militia. Was born Stephen Balliet. He was married three times to Barbara Neifer, Margaret Wagoner and Sarah White. After the death of Joseph Balliet about 1804, Stephen brought his family to the Ford place on the east bank of the Cheat River, just above the mouth of Wolf Creek, Preston County, to work on the opening of the Northwestern Turnpike Rt. 50. He later moved to the mountaintop between the present homes of Hamilton J. Brown and Columbus Bolyard and he remained there until his death. After leaving Heidelberg Township, Northampton County, PA, Stephen used the Bolyard spelling of the family name which is still carried by his descendants. From the Baillet book... "Stephen Bolyard arrived here (Preston Co., (W)VA very close to the year 1799, having come here from Pennsylvania. He first settled on the Ford place on the east bank of the Cheat River, just above the mouth of Wolf Creek. A few years later he crossed the river and located on the top of the mountain, south of where it is crossed by the Northwestern Turnpike (now Route 50), and between the present homes of Hamilton J. Brown and Columbus Bolyard. He died about 1840, age not far from 80 years. He was about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, of very broad frame, and of swarthy complexion.... The Bolyards came to Preston County a German speaking folk, and would appear to be of Palatine German extraction, although the family name in its present spelling is more suggestive of a French origin. The original form of the name seems to be lost".

!BIOGRAPHY: From Morton:
"Stephen Bolyard came from Pennsylvania about 1799, and lived first on th e Ford place at the mouth of Wold Creek. A few years later he located at the top of Laurel Hill, south of the turnpike line and near the "Drover's Rest." His first wife, mother of his children, accompanied him to Wolf Creek. The poineer was about five feet six inches tall, of very broad frame, and of swarthy complexion. Of his sons who remained in Preston, John lived on the Isiaah Bolyard, Henry on the turnpike, three miles east of Fellowsville, Nicholas at James K. Bolyard's and Stephen, called "Indian Steve," because of his dark complexion, close to the Israel church. To these brothers were born thirty sons and twelve daughters who grew to maturity, and all but one of the former were married. Until of late years the connection had been inclined to emigrate from the county, and in consequence the frequency of the Bolyard name in the east of Reno has long been a byword. It also occurs in Lyon, Union, Kingwood, and Valley. In 1900, there were 123 landowners of this name, 98 being in Reno." He was married to Barbara Margaret NEIFER in 1791 in , Lehigh, PA, USA.
