Individual:
Named for General Winfield Scott who was a Commander in the Mexican War in 1846. General Scott was from Virginia and was near the age of our ancestor, Mordecai Gilbert, so it is my opinion that the name Scott originated from a close friend of the family, General Winfield Scott, rather thatn from Sir Walter Scott, who was not known except as a relative of a relative. What is your opinion?
