Individual:
John Pack married Jane Hutchinson.
Carol Pack Urban, one of the mainstays of the Roots Web Pack mailing li st, was kind enough to transcribe this for us from the archives in Richmond. It reads pretty dry until you think of Clara, age 13, having to comfort her 3-year old brother Josephus as Eliott Vawter took them home to work on his farm. Meshack, 10 years old, was going to have to grow up fast too.
To the County Court of Monroe
By an Order of the County Court of Monroe made at the June term for 185 6, the undersigned together with George W Hutchinson and G.W. Landcraft were appointed to appraise the negroes belonging to the estate of John Pack deceased and return an account thereof to the Court. ...>
The undersigned attended at the house of Rufus Pack on the second day o f June 1856 the day fixed upon for the purpose and all parties interested in the property, but no other appraiser in attendance. Whereupon the distributees of said John Pack deceased all were present and competent to act entered into an Agreement and is herewith furnished marked A by which they agreed that the undersigned should execute the said Order of the County Court for and divide the Negroes belonging to said estate (it being the wish of them that the said Negroes should not be sold but remain in the possession of said distributees of said John Pack deceased.)
In accordance with said agreement the undersigned valued the said Negro es and distributed them as follows to wit:
Shady (female) valued at (42 years old) $450.00
Richard S Hampton valued at (21 years old) 800.00
Henry valued at (18 years old) 750.00
Abraham valued at (16 years old) 650.00
Clara valued at (13 years old) 500.00
Meshack valued at (10 years old) 450.00
Rachael valued at (7 years old) 300.00
Josephus valued at (3 years old) 225.00
Making in all the sum of $4,175.00
There being six shares the same due to each share is six hundred and ni nety five dollars and eight three cents.
After having valued the share as aforesaid the undersigned parties to d ivide the same between the parties instilled to participate then as follows:
to Rufus Pack was assigned the woman Shady and the boy Henry valued at t welve hundred dollars, he obliging himself to pay the difference between his share and said valuation;
to Archibald Pack is entitled to two shares and was allotted the two bo ys Richard S Hampton and Abraham valued at fourteen hundred and fifty dollars, he obliging himself to pay the difference between the two shares which he was entitled to and said valuation;
to Elliot Vawter was allotted the girl Clara and the small boy Josephus v alued at seven hundred and twenty five dollars, he obliging himself to pay the difference between his share and said valuation;
to Richard V Shanklin was allotted the boy Meshack valued at four hundr ed and fifty dollars, he consenting to receive the difference between said valuation and the amount of his share;
and to Rebecca Dunlap was allotted a small girl Rachael valued at three h undred and fifty dollars, she agreeing to receive her and pay the difference between said valuation and the share she was entitled upon agreement between her and the balance of the heirs share they would contribute a certain sum in addition;
The parties expressed themselves entirely satisfied with the valuation a nd desire and allotment as aforesaid and settled the several differences amongst themselves satisfactorily giving to Richard V Shanklin administrator do bonis non of John Pack deceased receipts for their respective in said slaves and direct the undersigned in his Report to Court to ask that said valuation and division may be confirmed and adopted by the Court and that the Article of Agreement marked A together with a Bill of Sale from Samuel Pack deceased to Archibald Pack for his Samuel Pack’s share of said Negroes may be entered into record.
All of which is most respectfully submitted June 11th 1856.
