Dec 27, 1850), who purchased the farm from his father in 1883. One grandchild of John M. Ward recalls him being nicknamed "Hoggy Ward" because he was a large pork producer. He used the railroad extensively to transport his horde of hogs and other livestock to the end of the road in Vandalia, Illinois. From there, he drove the animals afoot to the market in St. Louis, MO. (Source: 1843-1993 edition Cumberland County Illinois History p. 424)Another grandchild recalls John M. Ward, a well known and highly respected citizen of this community, passed away at his home three miles west of Greenup, on the National Highway, Sunday, April 19, 1925. Mr. Ward had been in declining health all winter and his condition had been considered grave for about a week preceding his death.John M. Ward was born in Ross County, Ohio, December 27, 1850, and departed this life April 19, 1925, being at the time of his death 74 years, 3 months and 24 days old.He was a son of Thornton A. and Ellen E. Ward. He came to this country with his parents and one brother, James, when one year of age. Almost his entire life has been spent in this community.He was united in marriage to Lydia Jane Fogleman December 25, 1871. To this union were born seven children, two of whom, Allison A. and Mrs. Mamie Light preceded him in death.He leaves to mourn their loss his loving companion, five children, Chas. M., Harrison and Mrs. Dora Holsapple of Greenup, Mrs. Belle Trimble of Jewett, and Mrs. Lena Freeman of Terre Haute, Ind.; two brothers. L. D. Ward of Oklahoma City, Okla., one sister, Mrs. Eva A. Cash of Lawrence, Kans.; twenty-nine grandchildren; also a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral services were conducted at the family home on Tuesday, April 21, at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev.
