Josiah came to Muhlenberg County as a boy. His father, Benjamin Dukes, bought wild lands, erected a log cabin, and eventually improved a farm, upon which he resided until his death. After his marriage, Josiah inherited his father's old homestead, where he farmed and raised stock until his death, at age 80, in 1883. He and his wife were devoted members of the Baptist church.
