BFT, Klempet, p. 49 has his birth date as 1856. OBITUARY OF SAMUEL MILLER BEIGHLEY:
Samuel Miller Beighley was born in Brownsville, Pa., February 18, 1856. He was the oldest child of Simon Peter and Louisa Miller Beighley.
Leaving his wife and young son in the home state the following spring, Mr. S. P. Beighley and his brother, Jacob, came to Minnesota, then the "Far West". "The Jumping Off Place" to homestead land and establish a home on the farm now owned by his youngest son, James, with adjacent acres on the north, east and south and returned to Pennsylvania for his family, make the return trip to Minnesota by team and covered wagon -- the small son, of course, insisting on doing the driving. With them came most of his Grandfather Peter Beighley's family, all settling in the same neighborhood.
Here, Sam, as he was familiarly called, spent his boyhood days, helping with the farm work as soon as he was old enough, and experiencing the many hardships and few pleasures of pioneer life, attending the public school and enjoying such church privileges as were available.
When a mere boy of 13 years, while driving a team of oxen, he was the victim of a runaway which resulted in an injury to his knees, causing him much trouble with his lower limbs and later, in life developing pain and swelling with consequent lameness and inability to walk much, which with other complications caused his death on December 30, 1929 at the age of 73.
In the fall of 1879, he engaged in buying grain with his uncle Jacob in the then comparatively new town of Gordonsville. The following spring he joined a company of friends and neighbors bound for Dakota on a home seeking trip and took a homestead in Spink County, returning at intervals to visit the home folks and some ten years later he sold his claim and returning to Gordonsville, built and operated a general store on the present site of the J. C,. Kalstad store; after some years he sold this and built a small candy and cigar store on the lot north, which he later traded for land in Arkansas, making frequent trips to that state; but having no family ties, the friends and home of his youth drew him back to Gordonsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Estelle and Mrs. Eva Turbett, and leaves to mourn his departure three brothers: Harvey, Joseph and James, four sisters - Mrs. Ellen Barker, Springfield, Oregon; Mrs. Maggie Odden, Northwood, Grace Brown, Gordonsville; and Mrs. Belle Booen, Albert Lea; and an aged uncle S. C. Miller and numerous other relative and many friends..
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gebhard on New Year's Day at the Methodist Church in Gordonsville and burial was made in the Stateline Cemetery.
