Knoxville, Tn. 11th March
1797....................... Sir, My instructions from the honorable the Secretary of War require that I report to you the names of all persons residing in the Cherokee Country not natives of the land.......................... For this purpose I have the following Schedule of their names and employments which I am induced to believe is tolerably accurate.............. John Mcdonald, Scotch, trader and Spanish agent. William Chambers, Unknw, Unknw....... The blanks in the nations column are either Americans or unknowns. Those whose characters are noted in the third column I have represented according to the best
information I have been able to receive. I am very respectfully, Sir Silas Dinsmoor
It is believed this may be William, the father of Thomas. Oral history of Scott County has him in Tennessee about this time. If it was indeed, our William, he did return to North Carolina, living in Bunscombe County about 1800.

RE: William Chambers
Hi Sheila, I was going through some of my "RidgeRunner" books by Yates and I came across a William Chambers who in 1793 served as a juror in Buncombe County in North Carolina. this was during the 2nd and 3rd terms of the Court in 1792. The last time I seen him was in July 1796 when he was deeded from a Thomas Patton 156 and 400 acres plats of land in Buncombe County, N.C. Hope this helps, Oh! there was also a mention of James, John and a Elihu Chambers.
[Note: This may also be our William, who was living in Bunscombe Co in 1810]
