NOTES AND SOURCES: Ephraim Franklin ELLS was the son of Isaac S. and Rhoda Ann (Field) Ells (also Eells) [see person 27]. He was born on 31 Aug 1854 in Freeport [Freeport VR Bk 1 p135; EFH p 156, 250] and died on 31 Jan 1920 prob. in Portland, Me. [Freeport VR Deaths 1892-1947 p 45; EFH p250; gravestone in Burr Cem. Freeport]. Storekeeper In 1898 (Per FBE Birth Cert.); Contractor, Stable Owner.
He was married in Freeport on 8 Nov 1882 [VR Book C or D, p 11] to ADA FLORENCE BROWN, b. 2 Feb 1859-60 in Freeport (or poss. Durham), Me., the dau of Charles Lyman Brown [II] and Martha A. (Mayberry) Brown, both born in Freeport. She died on 18 Oct 1905 in Portland, Me., leaving a young family [Freeport VR Deaths 1892-1947 p 19]. She was buried in Burr Cem. EFHist p. 250: Born "in the old Eells homestead. ... [EFE & wife] lived for a time in Freeport, but since his older brother inherited the homestead he took his belongimgs in the black wooden chest with the brass initials "E F E" and after several small successes, located in the city of Portland, Maine, where he became a contractor, at one time having a stable of forty-odd horses. He employed many men, ran a boarding house for them, and owned a grocery store. He was a tall and of a commanding appearance, a religious man, who lived by strict principles, but was liked and respected by all who knew him...They are buried with four generations of the Ells Family in Maine in the Burr Cemetery in Freeport."
