Bob Sterne

STERNEs of County Carlow, Ireland

The earliest ancestor we can trace, John STERNE (ca1772->1851) was born in Leinster, Ireland. He married Mary Anne SHERLOCK (ca1776-ca1847), and they raised their family in Clonegal, County Carlow, Ireland. After her death, he immigrated in 1847 to Ontario with his son Henry Tyghe. Two other sons, Thomas, and John Sherlock (with his wife Elizabeth KERR) had already immigrated to Ontario in 1840. Two of his daughters, Julia (married to Michael DOWZER) and Martha (who married William LANGFORD), immigrated about the same time. These children settled in Perth, Bruce, Middlesex, and Brant Counties. Henry Tyghe's son George Francis founded G.F. STERNE & SONS of Brantford, Ontario, who made products for the commercial building trade. John Sherlock's grandson William Henry Sherlock (my grandfather) married into the BEATTY family who in 1874 had founded BEATTY BROTHERS, manufacturers of farm machinery, in Fergus, Ontario.
