RUTHERFORDs of Cashleenan, Ireland

The earliest RUTHERFORD known to have settled in the Kilmacrenan area of County Donegal, Ireland was a Captain in the Army and a member of the “English Church”. He married an O’DONNELL, and may have been the James who died Feb. 19 1790. Their son James married Hannah DILL and their descendants are known as the “Rutherfords of Lower Cashleenan”. It is extremely likely that Robert (of "The Rutherford’s of Upper Cashleenan"), William, and Adam, are also his sons, and John (of "The Rutherford’s of Cabra") is also thought to be a son. Albert RUTHERFORD, a descendant of Robert supplied much of this information, and it has been transcribed for this website and added to by Bob STERNE, a descendant of James.
