Stuart G. Steingraber, Esq.Global TreeClubsMy GenCirclesSmartMatching
Descendants of Wm Fife of Scotland
He was b. in Scotland, but his wife's name is not known. Two of his three sons came to US, settling in VA and PA. His son William came to America in 1769 and lived for 7 yrs. in the Philadelphia, PA area. In 1776, he moved west, staking claim on property adjoining his brother John's in western PA. William was m. to Jane _____ who bore him 5 children. William makes reference to a Bartholomew Dimes in his will as his "son" but was probably a "foster child" or someone living with the family. In 1776, he enlisted with his son, John, age 26, as a private in the 12th Virginia Regiment. He fought with George Washington's army at Brandywine (Sep 1777), Germantown and other battles. He wintered at Valley Forge, PA during the winter of 1777-8. He was a private in Capt. Andrew Waggoner's Company from March 1777 to April 1778. He lost a leg in one of the battles and wore a "peg leg" for the rest of his life. He was referred to as "Capt. Billy". Many of the floors in the Fife home in Upper St. Clair bear the marks caused by his "peg leg".
He is bur. at Bethel Cem. His will was made 23 Jan 1789 and proved 29 Nov 1794. His "mark" was witnessed by Robert Huey and Hugh Thompson.
