According to "Germans to America" vol. 46, pg. 24, at age 59, Michael arrived in the US at Baltimore, MD 26 May 1883 aboard the ship "Strassburg" from Bremen. There were 1,215 other passengers on board, mostly from Germany. He listed his occupation as "landlord" and gave his US destination as Illinois. There were no other passengers named Steingraber on board. In 1999, his name was inscribed on panel 641 of the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island.
In 1900 IL census, he res. w/son Herman G. & gave b. place as Germany. Since the census was taken June 14, 1900, it appears he was d. 3 days bef. the enumeration. The census record also shows that he arrived US 1883, 2 yrs. aft. son Herman arrived. His b. date is May 1829 and listed as widower.
