Notes
Individual:
Occupation, chirurgien (surgeon)

In census records, Jacques Bourgeois is frequently referred to by the name Jacob Bourgeois , a lieutenant at Port Royal during the surrender. Jacques Bourgeois arrived in Port Royal in 1640 as a surgeon in d'Aulnay's regime and was in charge of coastal shipping and trade with the indians in Baie Francaise, Bay of Fundy. He was the second in command of d'Aulnay's regime. He and his sons Charles and Germain began the Bourgeois, later called Beaubassin or Cumberland Basin, settlement in 1672. In the book "History of the Acadians", Bona Arsenault writes that Jacques Bourgeois was one of the most prosperous people living in Port Royal. Records show that he owned 33 cattle and a herd of sheep. Some sources have Jacques' birthday as January 28, 1620/21. It is believed that all Bourgeois in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana were descended from him.
