William enlisted as a Private in the Union Army Dec. 15, 1863 inAlbion, Orleans, NY at age 24. Mustered in Co B, December29,1863 to serve three years. He was wounded (in the face)August20, 1864 at Blicks Station, VA. Was in Carver General Hospitalin Washington DC, from Sept 1, 1864 to April 1865. Walt Whitmanwas among the many volunteer workers helping the wounded at theCarver General Hospital, located on College Hill, and on oneoccasion during this period, Mrs. Lincoln was an emergencypatient at the hospital.He was transferred to Veteran ReserveCorps as a Full Drummer (on 01 March 1865). Pension card indicates 14th NY Heavyartillery (Same as his Brother George) William married MaryCarrol two months after being wounded in the face at BlicksStation during the Civil War. William's pension certificate#88868 was issued October 24 1865. A widow's pension #671629 wasissued November 24, 1905 to Anna Rosenbrook. William may have been in Michigan in 1867 since his son George Awas born there that year according to the 1875 census. Howeverthis is unclear since the 1870 census states that he was born inNew York. It is also unclear who George's mother was but may beassumed to be Mary Carroll. William is apparently listed asHenry, possibly his middle name, living with his sister MaryBrignall and her family (and his son, George) in 1870. William was listed in the Rochester, NY directory, 1888-91 as amason(1888/89) and a driver (1889/90) along with SarahRosenbrook (his step mother) living at 170 Orchard , boards 315Troup 15 New York. William is listed as a scholar at the stoneschool-house in Clarendon, NY in 1846 by John B.
