Text: Notes from Phillip Stamm:
We called my grandfather, Carl Cornwell, "Tunk". He loved to play cards especially the game of Pitch. When it was his turn to play a card he would raise the card above his head and bang it on the table. When his hand hit the table it made a sound like "tunk" hence the nickname. He played cards across the street from his house at a gas station run by a man named Sharpsteen.
Toward the latter part of his life he developed emphysema from smoking and working in a feed mill. He loved to listen to Yankee baseball and later watch it on TV. He would eat crackers and limburger cheese. I still recall walking into their home in Locke, N.Y. to the odor of that cheese. He would always look at us and say, "Want some cheese?" We would generally head out the back door.
In their house they had an ice box for a long time. Every day or every other day a man would deliver large blocks of ice to their house, place it in the ice box. That was their refrigerator. Grandma also cooked over a wood stove for a lot of years. To a young boy their house was a museum of wonderful things.
