In 1870 he migrated to a homestead in Labette CO (near Edna),3children were born in KY the rest in KA They moved to KA fromEdmonson CO, KY (because of it's poor soil), by oxteam in11/1869 to an area known as the strip, therestarting centennialgrove farm, which was named after the groveof trees plantedthere in 1876. The initial farm was 160 acr es.The farmconsisted of 240 acres. He specialized in raising Cotswold Sheepon his farm. He helped establish a church in Edna. He was aSergeant with Company F, 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry(Cavalrywould be a better term, but Mounted infantry wasCavalry, butfought dismounted not mounted). He was woundedtwice once at NewHaven, KY and again at Chickamauga. 1880 census lists ElmGrove, Labette CO, KS as residence and names as Jas. L. He wasa veteran of US Civil War, enlisted Aug 1861, Hardin Co., KY; &was member of Co. F, 4th KY Cavalry. Wounded twice in battle.Once during skirmish in New Haven, KY on the Rolling Fork River11 miles from Bardstown, KY; and again at the Battle ofChickamauga in TN. His nephew by the same name died as aprisoner of war in the Danville, VA POW camp in 1864.ReferenceNumber:189622
