Henry was a minister in the Methodist-Episcopal. In later life, he told members of his family that in the summer of 1868 he was at an all day service at Mt. Bethel Methodist-Episcopal Church (the primary church for that area of the state) near Rangeley Community in Henry Co. Susan Clark Cobbs and some of her girl friends rode horseback from the Salem Methodist Church in Patrick Co. to attend services at Mt. Bethel. He said that when he saw Susan coming down the isle, he told himself "she was the young lady he was going to marry". A year later, Henry was assigned to the pastorate of Salem Methodist Church.
Per Martha A. Anthony: Henry Chapman Bowles kept a diary in which he recorded the nickles, dimes and quarters he gave to children of his relations. Benjamin H. Bowles' will, submitted for probate by son Henry Chapman Bowles, and which listed Henry as primary beneficiary, was rejected by the court for reasons not now known.
Henry died on "the hottest day on record". He was walking back from the "Garden House" (outdoor privy) at Stella, climbed the style, sat down and collapsed.
