Notes
Individual:
FATHER: Will of John Simpson; Culpeper County, Virginia; Will Book B;

page 189. A transcription of this will is posted on the Web at
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/culpeper/wills/simpwill.txt.

MARRIAGE: Revolutionary War pension application file of Alexander
Simpson; W.6060; National Archives; Washington, D.C.

DEATH DATE/PLACE: Will of Alexander Simpson; Madison County,
Virginia; Will Book 10; page 89.

An affidavit in Alexander's federal pension file (cited above) says that he
was with the army at Valley Forge during "the winter of 1777 or 1778";
and a document in his Virginia bounty land file says that he was at
Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered (Library of Virginia Digital
Library Program; Revolutionary War Bounty Warrants
(http://198.17.62.51/collections/BW.html); Claim of the heirs of
Alexander Simpson of Madison County).

Alexander's name appears on the National Park Service's "Valley Forge
Muster Roll" of soldiers who served at Valley Forge during the Revolu-
tionary War (on-line database at http://www.nps.gov/vafo/home.htm).
According to that database, Alexander was a private in the 10th Virginia
Regiment, 5th Division, 2nd Virginia Brigade, in the company commanded
by Capt. John Gillison. That information matches information in his
pension application file at the National Archives. The "Monthly Status
Data" on the National Park Service site regarding Alexander's stay at
Valley Forge are as follows: December 1777: in hospital; January 1778:
in hospital; February 1778: in hospital; March 1778: in hospital; April
1778: [blank]; May 1778: on command; June 1778: [blank].
