!SURNAME: Records of the Va. Conference, Southern States Mission, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, FHL microfilm #0001995 (baptism of Mary Ann Martin, daughter of Sarah "Dallens"). A transcription of excerpts from this record is posted at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vagenealogy/heritage.htm BIRTH DATE: Sarah DOLLINS MARTIN was born between 1770 and 1775, as shown by the following evidence: (1) Federal Census; 1840; Nelson County, Virginia; page 67 (giving the age of William Martin's wife as 60-70; thus, born 1770-1780). (2) Federal Census; 1820; Nelson County, Virginia; page 196 (giving the age of William Martin's wife as 26-45; thus, born 1775-1794). The overlap in these records of Sarah's age is 1770-1775. I have, therefore, given her birth date as "about 1773" -- near the middle of that five-year range. Birth place is based on the fact that her father apparently lived in Albemarle County (see below). (That the William Martins in the above records are my William Martin is indicated by the facts that (1) William's age as given in the 1840 and 1820 censuses matches his age in the 1850 census of Nelson Co., and (2) the children's ages as given in the 1820 census match the ages of my William's children per other records (except that the 1820 census includes an additional female child). I have not used the 1830 census in the above calculation because I cannot find a William Martin family in Nelson or Albemarle Co. in that year, in which the ages of the father and the child match those of my William Martin and his children.) !PARENTS: Bill of Complaint; Nicholas Burgher etc. versus Joseph Burgher etc.; Albemarle County Chancery Cases; Library of Virginia Index number 1826-012 (stating that Sarah Dollins who married William H. Martin was a dau. of Anna Burgher, sister of Benjamin Burgher); Estate settlement of Benjamin Burgher; Albemarle County, Virginia; Will Book 7; page 429 (allotting part of Benjamin Burgher's estate to "the heirs of Rich. Dollins Decd"). Transcriptions of the above documents are posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/ an/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.albemarle/1917. The connection between Sarah and her father, Richard Dollins, is also reflected in the following evidence: (1) Sarah and her husband, William H. Martin, inherited land from one Richard Dollins (Deed from William H. MARTIN and wife Sally to John DOLLINS; Albemarle County, Virginia; Deed Book 24; page 432 (conveying "land which was owned and inherited by Richard Dollins Decd., and of which said Richard Dollens died possessed, and which said undivided interest has descended to the said William & Sally his wife as heirs and distributees of the estate of said Richard Dollens Decd. and which said interest is one third part, of the whole tract") (Sarah signs "Sarah her X mark Dollins") (executed Oct. 18, 1824)). (2) One Samuel and Elizabeth WOOD also inherited land from Richard Dollins (Deed from Samuel and Elizabeth WOOD to John DOLLENS; Albemarle County Deed Book 24; page 434 (executed Oct. 18, 1824) -- which deed is recorded immediately after that of William H. and Sarah Martin, and uses precisely the same language). (3) One Elizabeth Dollins married Samuel Wood (in 1815), and that Elizabeth's father was Richard Dollins (Albemarle County Marriages, 1780-1853; by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr.; vol. I; page 350). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
