Notes
Individual:
!SPOUSE, CHILDREN, DEATH DATE: Amended Bill (of

Complaint); Estes vs. Golding; Fredericksburg (Virginia) Circuit
Court; 1823, File #95. A transcription of this document is posted
on the Web at
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/orange/court/estesbil.txt.

!DEATH PLACE: Orange County, Virginia; Will book 4; Page 486.

!FATHER: The following items of evidence indicate that this William
Golding (called William Jr. below) is a son of the William Golding who
died in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, about 1782 (called William
Sr. below):
(1) William Sr.'s will identifies one of his sons as William (Abbeville
County, South Carolina; Probate Court; Box 39; Pkg. 839; Roll #AB16;
Frames 307-313).
(2) William Sr. lived in Orange County, Virginia, until 1771 (Orange
County, Virginia Tithables, 1734-1782, Part One; by Barbara Vines
Little; pages 38, 44, 84, 91, 98; Orange County, Virginia; Deed Book
15; page 347 (William Sr. as grantor, 1771); South Carolina Royal Land
Grants; Plat Book 16; pages 166, 130 (William Sr. as grantee, 1771)),
and William Jr. was living in Orange County at least as early as 1785
(Virginia Heads of Family 1790; 1785 Orange County Tax List, p. 97);
at least three of William Jr.'s children were married in Orange County
(Nancy in 1786, Richard in 1798, and Reuben in 1804) [sources for these
marriages are cited on each child's page]); and my William Jr. died in
Orange County in 1811 (Amended bill of complaint; Estes vs. Golding;
Fredericksburg (Virginia) Circuit Court; 1823, File #95 [transcription
posted on the Web at
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/orange/court/estesbil.txt]).
(3) In William Sr.'s will (1782), he left two slaves named Wagonner
and Lucy to his son William, and the appraisement of the estate of
William Jr. (1812) included a slave "Lucy an old woman" (Orange
County Will Book 4, page 497).
(4) Both William Sr. and William Jr. had children named William,
John, Reuben, Richard, Elizabeth, Mary (or Polly), and Sarah (per
William Sr.'s will and the amended bill of complaint cited in item 2
above).
(5) The twenty-nine-year span between William Sr.'s death date and
William Jr.'s death date is consistent with their being father and son.
(6) Although the Virginia state enumerations of 1782-1785 contain
two William Goldings (i.e., in Orange County and in Albemarle County
-- both in 1785), the William Golding who was living in Albemarle in that
year was apparently the son of William Jr. (Virginia Heads of Family
1790; 1785 Albemarle County Tax List, p. 80.) Given that his sister,
Nancy, was married in 1786, this William (i.e., William Jr.'s son) could
well have been old enough to be living separately in 1785. Also, the
William Golding household in Orange County in 1785 had seven white
souls, whereas the William Golding household in Albemarle County had
only three white souls -- further supporting the proposition that William
of Albemarle was younger.
(7) Another William Golding who lived in this part of Virginia died in
1771, so he could not have been the son William mentioned in William Sr.'s
will in 1782 (Will of William Golding; Culpeper County, Virginia; Will
Book B; page 32 (probated 21 Oct. 1771) [I have not seen this will, only
its reference on the Library of Virginia web site,
http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm]).

!According to the IGI, William and Sarah were married about 1754 in
Orange County.

!William Golding and Sarah Golding witnessed the will of Samuel
Estes of Orange County on Nov. 11, 1784 (Orange County, Virginia;
Will Book 3; page 237).

!Orange County (Va.) Deed Book 21, page 167. William Bell and
Elizabeth his wife of Orange County sell land in Orange County to
William Golding. Dated 27 Feb. 1797. Then, in Orange County (Va.)
Deed Book 26, page 259, Elizabeth Bell of Orange County sells, to
William Bell of Orange County, the land in Orange County on which
he now lives. Dated 28 Sep. 1815. Since Elizabeth sold land in 1815
without her husband's participation, her husband had apparently died
between 1797 and 1815, which is further evidence that the William
Bell in the 1797 deed is the same William Bell who died in 1800.
