Individual:
BIRTH DATE/PLACE (Virginia): Federal Census; 1870; Albemarle County,
Virginia; page 455. The 1850 census for Albemarle County (page 278)
says that Lewis was born about 1805, but I am using the 1870 census
because (1) the age given in the 1850 census is a round number (45),
whereas the age given in the 1870 census (71) is not; and (2) there is a
greater tendency, in the census, to understate age than to overstate it.
The 1860 census gives Lewis a birth date of about 1800 (Albemarle Co.,
p. 597).
PARENTS: Certificate to Obtain a Marriage License; Clerk's Office;
Albermarle Co., Virginia (marriage of Lewis Thacker, son of Daniel and
Lucy, to Rebecca Drumheller). This source says he was born in Albemarle
County, but I am using the death register (see below) for his place of
birth instead, because (1) he was married in Fluvanna Co., and (2) his
parents were married in Louisa Co. rather than Albemarle Co. That
Lewis was a son of Daniel Thacker is also reflected in Administrator's
account of the estate of Daniel Thacker; Albemarle County, Virginia; Will
Book 22; page 384.
MARRIAGE (to Nancy Clements): Marriage bond and consent note;
Clerk's Office, Fluvanna County, Virginia. Also reflected in Albemarle
County Register of Deaths, 1853-1861 (1861, line 20) (death of Nancy
Thacker, nee Clements, consort of Lewis Thacker). That this is my
Lewis Thacker is indicated by the following facts:
(1) The federal census has only one Lewis Thacker in Virginia in 1830,
1840, 1850, and 1870 (Fluvanna Co., p. 354; Albemarle Co., p. 160;
Albemarle Co., p. 278; Albemarle Co., p. 455). There are two Lewis
Thackers in the 1860 census for Virginia, but only one of them was old
enough to have been married in 1828 (Albemarle Co., p. 597; Nelson Co.,
p. 840).
(2) Lewis Thacker was living in Fluvanna County in 1830 (where the
marriage occurred two years earlier), and in Albemarle County in 1840,
1850, 1860, and 1870.
(3) Fluvanna County and Albemarle County are contiguous.
(4) The informant in the Nancy (Clements) Thacker death record (see
above) was a "Mrs. Pugh," daughter of the deceased; and a daughter of
my Lewis Thacker (Nancy Jane) married a Mr. Pugh.
MARRIAGE (to Margaret (Thacker) Drumheller): Certificate to Obtain a
Marriage License; Clerk's Office; Albermarle Co., Virginia (Also stated in
Marriage Index: District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, & Virginia, 1740-
1920; on-line database at www.genealogy.com (citing Family History Library
microfilm number 0899812).) This is the marriage of Lewis Thacker and
"Rebecca Drumheller." That this is the marriage of my Lewis Thacker and
Margaret Drumheller is shown by the following facts:
(1) There are only two Lewis (or Louis) THACKERs in the 1860 census
of Virginia, and only one of them (my Lewis) was living in Albemarle
County, where this marriage occurred (Albemarle Co., p. 597; Nelson Co.,
p. 840).
(2) The surname of my Lewis's second wife, Margaret, was
Drumheller before their marriage (see note under Margaret Drumheller).
(3) My Lewis Thacker's first wife died in 1861, the year before this
marriage (see note under Nancy Clements).
BIRTH PLACE (Fluvanna Co.), DEATH DATE/PLACE: Register of Deaths;
Albemarle County, Virginia (as abstracted in the Death Records Indexing
Project, on-line database at http://eagle.vsla.edu/drip/). Lewis Thacker,
age 80 and born in Fluvanna Co., died September 1876. Informant:
Sam Thacker, son. Parents' names not stated. For Lewis's birth date,
I am using the census records (see above) rather than this record,
because the census records were created closer to the actual event.
Lewis's year of death and location (county) are also reflected in Will
of Lewis Thacker; Albemarle County, Virginia; Will Book 29; page 237
(lists his children as Samuel D. Thacker, Eliza Ann Pleasants, Elizabeth
Suddarth, Ruthy A. Thacker, N. Jane Pugh, Mary Frances Thacker).
According to the International Genealogical Index of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lewis had a son Joseph, born about
1842 in ", Of Civil War, Virginia."
Lewis Thacker is included in the Fluvanna County personal-property tax
lists for 1819 and 1820, but there is no notation as to his father.

Lewis's will (cited above) mentions grandsons Joseph Thacker and
Henry Thacker, without identifying their father. Apparently, their father
had died, as shown by the following facts:
(1) In 1880, Joseph Thacker, age 19, and Henry Thacker, age 17,
were living in the home of William Spencer, age 57, and Elizabeth F.
Spencer, age 38 (Federal Census; 1880; Amherst County, Virginia;
E.D. 16; page 152B). The household also included several children with
the surname Spencer, at least one of whom, at age 25, was too old
to have been borne by Elizabeth.
(2) In 1883, Henry Thacker and Joseph Thacker conveyed to
Samuel D. Thacker all of their interest in "the land devised to Henry and
Joseph in the will of Lewis Thacker deceased" (Albemarle Co., Va.,
DB 82:318-319).
I believe that Joseph and Henry's father was Holman Thacker, rather
than some other, as-yet unidentified son of Lewis, based on the
following facts:
(1) Holman Thacker married Frances E. Thomas in 1859 (see note
under Holman). This marriage date is consistent with the ages of
Joseph and Henry as given in the 1880 census.
(2) Lewis's family in 1860 included Holman and TWO females named
Frances, one 18 years old and the other 20 years old (Federal Census;
1860; Albemarle Co., Va., p. 597). Apparently, the 18-year-old was
Lewis's daughter (called Mary Frances in his will), and the 20-year-old
was Holman's wife.
(3) The name of William Spencer's wife as given in the 1880 census
(see above) is "Elizabeth F." Apparently, the middle initial stood for
"Frances," and the middle initial of Holman's wife, per the marriage
record, stood for "Elizabeth."
(4) William Spencer had not yet married Elizabeth in 1860 (Federal
Census; 1860; page 657), and there is no other THACKER in the 1860
census of Albemarle County with a wife named Frances or Elizabeth.
(5) There is no Holman Thacker in the 1870 census (in any state),
and Holman is not mentioned in Lewis's will.
