Notes
Individual:
!SPOUSE (first name): Will of Edmund Daniel; Spotsylvania County,

Virginia; Will Book F; page 103. (In a judicial complaint by Edmund's
children against his widow, her name is stated as "Peggy," but the
"Peggy" is scratched out and replaced with "Aggy" in each instance.
(Daniel &c. v. Daniel, Spotsylvania County Court of Chancery,
1841-074/CC.))

!CHILDREN: Edmund's children are listed in their complaint against
Edmund's widow, in Daniel &c. v. Daniel, Spotsylvania County Court
of Chancery, 1841-074/CC. My transcriptions of the complaint and
answer in this lawsuit are posted on the Web, at
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.
northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.spotsylvania&m7.
(This suit began in 1801, but the clerk's reference number includes
"1841" because it ended in that year.) Sons "Rubin" and "Tomson"
are also named in Edmund's will.

!All of the evidence for the connection between Edmund and his son,
Reuben, is explained on my Web site, at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vagenealogy/reuben.htm.

!DEATH DATE/PLACE: Will of Edmund Daniel; Spotsylvania County,
Virginia; Will Book F; page 103 (executed and probated in 1799).

!BROTHERS: Edmund Daniel appointed his son, Reuben, as
his attorney-in-fact in relation to the estate of "my loving Brother
William Daniel late of the State of Georgia." (Spotsylvania County,
Virginia; Deed Book B; page 205 (dated May 1796).) The will of
William Daniel lists his brothers as Edmund, Samuel, and Jonathan
(Wilkes County, Georgia; Will Book C; page 53 (executed Feb. 1791)).

!Edmund lived in Caroline County, Virginia, before living in
Spotsylvania County, as indicated by the following facts:
(1) He signed a religious petition in Caroline County dated Oct. 27,
1785. A copy of this signature, from page 5 of the petition, is posted
on my Web site, at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vagenealogy/
images/edmund4.jpg. This signature seems to match those of Edmund
Daniel of Spotsylvania County (*see note below*), which are also posted on
my Web site, at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vagenealogy/daniel_sigs.htm.
(The Oct. 27, 1785, religious petition from Caroline County is part of the
Library of Congress's American Memory collection, at
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/repehtml/repehome.html.)
(2) No other Caroline County religious petitions in the American
Memory collection bears the signature of an Edmund Daniel, even
though the collection includes several petitions from that county after
1785.
(3) Edmund bought land in Spotsylvania County on March 20,
1786 (recorded Sep. 5, 1786), and the deed calls him "Edmund Daniel
of the County of Caroline." (Spotsylvania County Deed Book L,
page 144.)
(4) The first listing of an Edmund Daniel in the Spotsylvania County
land tax lists occurs in 1786.
(5) The first Spotsylvania County religious petition that bears the
signature of an Edmund Daniel is dated Nov. 1, 1786 (on the other
hand, the American Memory collection includes only one
Spotsylvania County petition before this date).
(6) In an 1814 deed of trust written entirely in the hand of Edmund's
son, Reuben, Reuben initially wrote "I Reuben Daniel of Carol", then
scratched out "Carol" and wrote "Spotsylvania". (Spotsylvania
County, Virginia; Deed Book T, page 454.) This suggests that either
Reuben had formerly lived in Caroline County, or that he was using an
earlier deed of trust from Caroline County (perhaps signed by his
father) as a model.

!Edmund Daniel was executor for the estate of one Elijah Daniel --
possibly his father -- in Caroline County in 1784 (ordering that will be
recorded) (Carolina County Order Book; October Court 1784; page
461). Elijah's will, however, does not survive.

!*NOTE REGARDING THE CAROLINE COUNTY SIGNATURE:
The Edmund Daniel signature from Caroline County, referred to above,
has the same low, even profile as Edmund's signatures on the
Spotsylvania County petitions. The capital "E," the first small "d,"
and the small "l" are strikingly like those letters in the Spotsylvania
signatures, and the capital "D" seems to be quite close (although it's a
little hard to tell because it's partially obscured by a smudge or
something). The other letters are basically the same, although they are
not formed quite as carefully as on the Spotsylania petitions; maybe he
was in a hurry when he wrote this one.

!There is no marriage for an Edmund Daniel in _Marriages of Caroline
County, Virginia, 1777-1853_, by Therese A. Fisher. Land tax records of
Spotsylvania County indicate that he was in that county by 1786.
The absence of a marriage record in Caroline County from 1777-1786
may suggest that he and Peggy were married before 1777, and, therefore,
may increase the likelihood that she was his first wife.
