FATHER: The following items of evidence indicate that my Lewis
Seal is a son of the John Seal who died in Madison County, Virginia,
in 1864:
(1) The will of John Seal lists one of his sons as Lewis
(Madison County, Virginia; Will Book 11; page 609);
(2) John Seal lived in Madison County at least in 1830 (census,
page 23), 1850 (census, page 101), 1860 (census, page 66), and 1864
(when he died); and Lewis Seal lived in Madison County in 1860
(census, page 66) and 1880 (census, page 388), and in contiguous
Page County in 1850 (census, page 292) and 1870 (census, page 378);
(3) The census records contain no other Lewis Seal anywhere in
Virginia in 1850 or 1860, and no other Lewis Seal in Madison or Page
County in 1870 or 1880 (another Lewis Seal lived in Southhampton
County, Virginia, in 1870 and 1880, but he was born in Pennsylvania,
whereas both John and my Lewis were born in Virginia);
(4) The 1830 census record of John Seal's family (Madison County,
page 23) has a male child in the correct age range to be my Lewis
(i.e., 15-20 years old; my Lewis would have been about 18 in 1830);
(5) John Seal married Susannah Jenkins in 1809 in Madison County,
which was three years before my Lewis was born;
(6) My Lewis named one of his sons John, and he gave another son
the middle name Henry, which was the name of one of John's sons; and
(7) Although no Lewis appears in John's family in the 1850 census,
my Lewis was married about 1842.
SPOUSE: Pullen vs. Miller; Chancery Case #45; Rappahannock
County, Virginia (to settle estate of Zachariah Shackleford).
Marriage date is based on the fact that their oldest child was born
about 1843, and marriage place is based on the fact that they were
living in Page County, Virginia, in 1850.
