Individual:
!BIRTH DATE, SURNAME, MARRIAGE, DEATH PLACE:
War of 1812 Bounty Land File of Reuben Daniel; National Archives,
Washington, D.C. (saying that her name, before her marriage to the
soldier, was Elizabeth Pollard). Two separate statements in this file,
provided by Elizabeth in 1854 and 1855, yield a birth date of about
1769. The 1850 census for Madison County, Virginia (dwelling
#316) is to the same effect, providing a birth date of about 1768.
The Daniel-Estes Family Bible, on the other hand, provides a
slightly earlier birth date, saying that she was aged 92 years, six
months, and two weeks at death -- therefore, that she was born
about October 1765. The Bible, however, is wrong as to the age of
Elizabeth's husband, Reuben Daniel, when he died (see note under
his name), thus increasing the possibility that it is wrong as to
Elizabeth's age at death.
!BIRTH PLACE: Federal Census; 1850; Madison County, Virginia;
dwelling #316.
!Reuben Daniel, Elizabeth's husband, executed a bond in 1790 --
the year after their marriage -- stating that he, "as Executors and
Administrators shall well and Truly pay and deliver or Cause to be
paid and Delivered unto Martha Pollard Orphan of Haz Pollard
deceased all Such estate or Estates as now is or are or hereafter Shall
appear to be due to the said orphan when and as Soon as She shall
attain to Lawfull age or when thereto required of the Justices of the
said County Court" (Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Will Book E, page
1003). This raises the possibility that Martha was Elizabeth's child by
a previous marriage. The following facts establish, however, that
POLLARD was Elizabeth's maiden name rather than the surname of
an earlier husband:
(1) The Family Bible of Reuben M. Melton of Madison County,
Virginia (transcription posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/
msg/an/IA1.2ACIB/1199), includes these entries: "Births ... Mrs. Eliza
Collins d/o Reuben Daniel & Elizabeth Pollard was born Dec 12th 1802
... Deaths ...John Collins departed this life March the 18th 1878, in
the 77th year of his life".
(2) Elizabeth was only 20 years old when she married Reuben
Daniel, and most people did not remarry for some time after the
death of a spouse.
(3) After two years (at the very most) of marriage to a
Mr. Pollard, followed by 63 years of marriage to Reuben Daniel
(from 1789 until Reuben's death in 1852), Elizabeth probably would
not have given her first husband's surname as the surname that she
had before her marriage to Reuben.
(4) The 1790 bond may have been prompted, not by Reuben's
marriage to Elizabeth, but by the death, about 1789, of a Sarah
Pollard in the same County (Spotsylvania County, Va.; Will Book E;
page 974). Sarah Pollard was listed as a head of household in the
1787 personal-property tax list for Spotsylvania County (_The 1787
Census of Virginia_, by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman
Love, vol. 2; page 881). Additionally, the following entry, dated Dec.
1789, appears in the Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Order Book 1755-
1786, on page 330: "Ordered that the overseers of the poor in
District no. 2 bind out ... Thomas Pollard orphan of Hez Pollard
according to law." The "Hez Pollard" of this entry is presumably the
same person as the "Haz Pollard" in the 1790 bond referred to above,
such that Thomas and Martha were apparently siblings. If Thomas
had been Elizabeth's child by a previous marriage, then Reuben and
Elizabeth would presumably have raised him, eliminating any need for
Thomas to be bound out.
!DEATH DATE: Daniel-Estes Family Bible.
