Notes
Individual:
!BIRTH DATE, BIRTH PLACE: Federal Census; Albemarle County,

Virginia; 1900; E.D. 9; page 29. This census calls him "N.L. Suddard,"
but the ages of Nathaniel and Elizabeth, and the number of children borne,
are consistent with the 1880 census, and the number of years married is
consistent with the marriage bond.

!MIDDLE NAME: Federal Census; Albemarle County, Virginia; 1880;
E.D. 10; page 256 (Nathaniel is listed as "Lewis N."). Wife and children
listed with him are consistent with the 1870 census (Albemarle County,
page 455). Nathaniel's full name is also stated in his widow's Confederate
pension application (see below).

!PARENTS: Federal Census; 1850; Fayette County, Virginia (now West
Va.); page 346 (home of "Horris" and Martha Sudderth). That the son
"Nat" in this family is my Nathaniel Suddarth is indicated by the following
facts:
(1) "Nat" in this family was born about 1835, and my Nathaniel was born
in 1835.
(2) In 1840, the Horace Suddarth family was living in Albemarle County,
Virginia (census, page 159), where my Nathaniel was married in 1857.
The ages of the family members in the 1840 listing in Albemarle County
match those in the 1850 listing in Fayette County.
(3) Horace Suddarth and Martha Clements were married in Albemarle
County, Virginia, on Nov. 19, 1832 (Albemarle County Marriages,
1780-1853; by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr.; page 303).
(4) My Nathaniel Suddarth named his first son Horace.

!MARRIAGE: Marriage bond; Clerk's Office; Albemarle County, Virginia.

!In the 1860 census of Albemarle County, Virginia, this family is listed
as Nat L Sutherds, age 25, Elizabeth Sutherds, age 30, and Isabella F
Sutherds, age 1 (page 599B).

!DEATH DATE: Bible of Martha Jane Suddarth Wade. The Bible calls
him "N.L. Suddarth."

!DEATH PLACE: Application of Elizabeth H. Suddarth, widow of
"Nathaniel Lewis Suddarth"; Confederate Pension Rolls, Veterans &
Widows (images on-line at http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/virtua-advanced.html).
This source confirms date of death as November 1916.

!According to Nathaniel Suddarth's application for a Civil War pension,
he was struck in the left temple by a musket ball and lost his left eye
while serving in the war. This occurred "in front of Petersburg" on
June 17, 1864. These documents are available on the Web at
http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/virtua-advanced.html.

!Nathaniel Suddarth's Civil War service was in Company I of the 46th
Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Company I was known as the "Green
Mountain Grays." It was organized at Albemarle, Virginia, on July 16,
1861, and its first commander was Roberts Coles.
