County, Virginia; 1894. Abstract: Sarah Bowman; died Dec. 31 in
Conicsville; age 81; cause: old age; parents Jacob and Mary Roudabush;
born Rockingham County; widow; informant: J.A. Walters, son.
My Levi C. Walter and Sarah Roudebush had a son named Joseph A.
Walter. (In the 1895 death register is this entry: Sarah Bowman;
died Jan. 1 in Conicsville; age 81; cause: heart disease; parents Jacob
and Mary Roudabush; born Page County; widow; informant: C.W.
Walters, grandson.) I'm assuming that the son rather than the
grandson was better informed as to Sarah's birth place and the time of
her death (she apparently died near midnight). Also, regarding the
place of birth, Sarah's parents were married in Rockingham County.
The name of Sarah's father is also stated in the record of her marriage
to Levi Walter (see note under Levi).
SPOUSE (second, Moses Bowman): The 1870 census of Rockingham
County, Virginia (page 267A), has Moses Bowman, age 58, with Sarah
Bowman, age 55. That this Sarah Bowman is my Sarah (Roudebush)
Walter is indicated by the following facts:
(1) Sarah's death record (cited above) indicates that my Sarah had
married a Mr. Bowman at some point.
(2) No Sarah "Walter(s)" appears in the 1870 census in the Rockingham
and Shenandoah area (where my Sarah died in 1894).
(3) Sarah Bowman, age 64, is listed in the 1880 census (Shenandoah
Co., page. 484D), with her daughter Martha A. Walter, age 34, and son
Joseph A. Walter, age 30, along with grandchildren Alice W. Walter,
age 13, and Charles F. Walter, age 10. No Moses Bowman, of the right
age to be the one in the 1870 census with wife Sarah, appears in the
1880 census, in any state.
Moses Bowman and Sarah Walter were reportedly married 21 Oct. 1865
in Rockingham County, Virginia.
In 1870, Sarah's children Joseph and Martha were living in the following
household (Shenandoah County, Va., p. 628B):

Mahala Walter, age 21
Mary A. Walter, age 3 (apparently the same person as Alice, age 13, in the
1880 census)
